Comment on noteThe wine
Imagine for a moment Tuscany, its gentle hills and its sun-drenched vineyards. It is there, in the heart of Montalcino, that I discovered a gem that perfectly embodies the greatness of Brunello. This wine is not just a drink, it is an invitation to a sensory journey, a liquid story.
The Pieve Santa Restituta estate, whose name evokes an ancient church, was acquired by the Gaja family in 1994. Nestled in the Montalcino region of Tuscany, its vineyards enjoy a privileged location. A unique microclimate, ventilated and dry, protects the vines from excessive humidity, thus ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. This meticulous care given to the terroir, with rehabilitation work aimed at preserving the plant heritage and soil health, is the key to the exceptional quality of this Brunello. It is made from Sangiovese Grosso, the region's emblematic grape variety.
This Brunello is the fruit of a blend of the best plots of Pieve Santa Restituta. Each lot ferments and macerates separately in steel tanks for about three weeks. This is followed by 24 months of aging in wood, then an additional 6 months of refinement in cement tanks. Its color is an intense ruby. On the nose, I perceive an ample and precise bouquet, with notes of juniper, aromatic herbs, flowers and cherry. On the palate, it reveals a rich structure, balanced acidity and ripe tannins. The finish is long, persistent and deeply satisfying, testifying to its quality and unique character.
This Brunello is an ideal partner for indulgent moments. I recommend it with roasted red meats, game, grilled dishes or stews. Its complexity and structure also make it an excellent wine for meditation. Take the time to savor it unhurried, in good company or during a quiet evening, accompanied by a good book. It is ideally enjoyed between 16 and 18°C and can be kept for 5 to 7 years to develop even more nuances.
