Stay in the Maremma
Tosco's wordWelcome to Scansano, perched on its hill where the Maremma wind makes the Morellino vines shiver. Here the lanes smell of wine and warm bread, and the squares fill up to the rhythm of conversation. My tip: come on a Saturday morning to wander the market, then end your day at the Piazza del Castello in nearby Montemerano to savor the evening.

The guide
Scansano sits on its hill like a balcony set above the vineyards, inland, without a meter of sand within reach of your sandals. Staying in Scansano makes sense if you want a quiet base, rows of Morellino stretching to the roadsides, and a village you can cross on foot in ten minutes. It makes no sense if you dream of early-morning swims or bars open late. Here, in the evening, you mostly hear shutters closing and cars heading back down to the hamlets. This article tells you who the base works for, who it doesn't, and how to choose between the village and the countryside.
Yes, on one condition: you have a car. Scansano is the heart of the appellation Morellino di Scansano DOCGa land of hills, oaks and vineyards, not a seaside resort. No beach can be reached on foot, and no nightlife makes up for it.
The village is about 10 km from Grosseto, which puts you half an hour from amenities without suffering the noise. Magliano in Toscanaabout 3.6 km away, serves as a neighbor for a coffee or dinner when Scansano falls asleep.
I recommend it if you like to explore and then return to silence. I don't recommend it if you want a change of scenery without driving or if you're going for ten days at the beach. The math is simple: Scansano gives you calm and access to the vineyards, the road pays for the rest.
In the village, you leave the car in a car park and do everything on foot. The lanes climb, the pale stones hold the afternoon heat, and the square comes alive at aperitif time. Without a car, that is in fact the only option: your stay shrinks to the centre.
Morelliana 4 Rooms occupies a historic building at the heart of the village, in the characterful guesthouse format. Casa di Corte is a modern apartment with a balcony right in the centre, handy if you want to be a stone's throw from the square when the market sets up on Friday morning on Piazza Garibaldi. Casa Valle offers self-contained apartments with kitchens: the entry-level choice for those who prefer to cook.
The hamlets change the logic. You gain pitch-black nights, the crowing of roosters before six, windows looking out over fields. You lose the bread you could buy on foot.
Casa Pereta offers a private terrace near the village of Pereta, and Casa Romantica Pereta sits in the medieval borgo, set apart: a car is essential. L'asino Vola, a simple B&B in Murci, and Alfredo Romano, quiet in the countryside of Poggioferro, complete the list. Every drive to dinner becomes a decision. Plan for it.
The agriturismo or wine estate looks great in photos: rows of vines, olive trees, a panorama over the Maremma. On the ground, it sets a rhythm. The car for every outing, days that stretch out, and above all dinners to organize, because a restaurant on site is very rare.
Podere l'Aione is the exception: an agriturismo between vines and olive trees with an on-site restaurant and a view over the Maremma. Fattoria Di Magliano Winery lets you sleep right where the Morellino is tasted, which settles the evening glass without getting back behind the wheel. Il Marciatoio plays the charm card, amid olive trees and vines.
If you go elsewhere for a tasting, designate the sober driver first thing in the morning. Three Morellino di Scansano tastings take place in Scansano itself: the argument is there, but the night road between the vines does not forgive improvisation.
Rather than a price grid, three tiers are enough to sort things out.
Self-sufficiency. Casa Valle or Casa Pereta: a kitchen, a balcony or a terrace, you manage your own meals. This is the most flexible formula if you like bringing back market produce and cooking in the evening.
Comfort and character. Antico Casale Di Scansano Resort is a 4-star hotel in a restored 19th-century farm. Casale Sterpeti, in Magliano in Toscana, is a former casale converted into a small charming hotel with eight rooms: more intimate, a little apart from Scansano.
Unusual. Sasseta Alta is an organic agriturismo in the hills, not a hotel: you come for the countryside, not for service. Relax in Maremma tra Saturnia e Argentario, in Pancole, suits you if your days revolve around the thermal baths rather than Morellino.
Three nights: that is the minimum that justifies Scansano as a base. Fewer, and you spend your time driving without seeing anything. More, and you settle into the rhythm of the hills and every excursion fits in without stress.
September changes the picture. The month hosts the Festa dell’Uva and "Settembre a Scansano Morellino e sapori Doc": demand climbs and the good addresses go early. If that's your month, book before anything else.
I prefer the other months. Outside September, the village is calmer, rooms are easier to find, and you have the streets to yourself when the sun drops onto the stone.
In the area, Podere L’Aione remains the only table worth booking. Beyond that, the stay is built around wine and produce rather than restaurants. You come back from the market with wild boar salami, pecorino and Maremma olive oil, settle onto your terrace, and that's dinner.
This works very well in an apartment. It requires forethought if you're sleeping at an isolated farm: without a table on site, in the evening you have to get back on the road. Plan dinner before sunset, not after.
The logic is to build days that don't resemble each other, by car.
Marina di Alberese is the access point to the coast of the Uccellina park. The sand is bordered by pines bent by the wind, and the trails climb through the maquis to the abbey of San Rabano, a stone ruin in the dry light. Allow half a day for the journeys alone.
For a tuff day, Piazza del Castello in Montemerano leads into the heart of a narrow, dark stone village, warm late in the afternoon. Follow it with the Saturnia thermal baths for hot water against a backdrop of hills. The combination makes a full day, without road fatigue.
What trips people up is the type of accommodation. Several addresses are entire rentals or agriturismos without hotel services, such as Holiday Home Ginestra and Sasseta Alta: no reception, no breakfast served, sometimes no daily housekeeping.
Before confirming, review four points: is a kitchen available to you, is breakfast included, how far is it from the village, and is it a room or an entire house. Confirm with the host if any doubt remains, it's your money.
Start by fixing your car and your three nights, then choose between the village and the farm. The rest, the vineyards will take care of organizing.

Frequently asked questions
Answers drawn from our rated addresses around Scansano, figures updated daily.
For a stay in Scansano, choose a agriturismo if you want calm, a true immersion in the countryside and a moderate budget: there are 13 of them and rates start at €68. Choose a classic accommodation (hotel, residence, bed and breakfast) if you care about services, proximity to the village or a more standardized comfort; there are 20 of them, from €90, with a median price around €220, which is less than the median for agriturismos (€266).
The criterion that really makes the difference is your budget and your travel style: for a simple night, the agriturismo is often more economical; for a stay with a pool, an on-site restaurant or hotel services, check the detailed listings. An honest limitation: the ratings we display are based on analysis of reviews and available information, and we have not verified them on site. Compare the agriturismos and the accommodations in Scansano before booking.
Account two days for a first visit: the 7 places to see are all within 8 km of the village, so you can chain them together without long journeys, then add a tasting or an activity. If you also want to take your time at an agriturismo, three days will leave you some room.
To organize your days, first choose your accommodation: the agriturismos in our selection are often in the countryside, away from the village, whereas the accommodations are closer to the center. Look at the listings of our best-rated addresses, such as Agriturismo Il Marciatoio, before setting your itinerary.
Honest limitation: our selection does not give the exact duration of each visit, which depends on your pace and the season. Set aside an extra half day if you want to taste the wines on site.
