Our rating method

How we rate places in Maremma

On Hidden Tuscany, each place receives a rating out of 10 accompanied by five detailed scores. Here is how it is built — no mystery and no opaque algorithm.

Who does the rating?

My name is Agnieszka. I have been working in the hotel industry for twenty years, between Paris and various locations across Europe. This profession has taught me one thing: the difference between a place that sells well and a place that is truly worth the detour.

For more than ten years, I have returned every year to the same area — the province of Grosseto, the Tuscan Maremma, the tufa villages, the wild hot springs, the Etruscan coast. Not just one week a year. Several stays, country roads, bivouacs at the hot springs at dawn, remote agriturismos, local markets on a Tuesday morning. It is this capital of repeated and compared experiences that feeds the ratings published here.

I only rate what I have visited in person, ideally several times in different seasons.

The 5 criteria

Each place is evaluated on five dimensions. These criteria adapt to the category : the criteria for judging a beach are not the same as for a medieval village or a local food restaurant.

CategoryThe 5 criteria evaluated
Villages, sites, hot springs, natureAuthenticity · Accessibility · Quality/experience ratio · Photogenic appeal · Quality of the lived experience
Gastronomy & terroirLocal typicity · Taste quality · Value for money · Setting & presentation · Tasting experience
Accommodations & staysAuthenticity of the place · Real comfort · Value for money · Integration into the environment · Quality of the welcome

Each criterion receives a score from 0 to 10. The overall score is a weighted average — some criteria count more depending on the nature of the place (authenticity weighs more for a tuff village; taste quality comes first for a winemaker).

The role of AI in the rating

The evaluation is human and personal. But comparing a wild thermal spring and a local produce restaurant on the same 0 to 10 scale poses a calibration problem: without a common reference point, a personal 8/10 can mean very different things depending on the context.

This is where our normalization algorithm comes in. Based on my raw scores, the context of the place (type, hub, season of visit, attendance) and the available public feedback (Italian Google Maps reviews, traveler forums, local publications), an AI model recalibrates the scores to ensure that an 8.5 at Cala Violina is comparable to an 8.5 at the Saturnia Thermal Baths.

AI doesn't rate in my place — it makes the scores consistent with each other across the entire catalogue.

The 0 to 10 scale

RatingWhat it means
9,0 – 10Exceptional. A place that alone justifies a detour or a dedicated stay.
8,0 – 8,9Very good. A must-see in its category for the region.
7,0 – 7,9Good. Recommended, worth visiting if you're passing through the area.
6,0 – 6,9Fair. Interesting but with notable reservations.
< 6.0Below our editorial standards. Not published.

We do not publish listings for places rated below 6/10. Our catalogue contains only positive recommendations — if a place doesn't measure up, it simply isn't listed.

What this rating is not

  • It is not an aggregated TripAdvisor rating. Mass reviews measure the satisfaction of the average tourist, not the intrinsic quality of an off-the-beaten-path place.
  • It is not a paid rating. No accommodation, restaurant or site can buy a better rating. Affiliate links (when they exist) are independent of the score — a place can be listed without an affiliate link, and vice versa.
  • It is not exhaustive. Toscane Cachée covers exclusively the province of Grosseto and a few bordering Etruscan sites. We do not rate what we do not know.

Do ratings change over time?

Yes. I return to the region every year. A restaurant that loses its chef, a thermal spa concreted over for the season, a village overrun by mass tourists — the rating can go down. An agriturismo that opens a beautiful tasting room — it can go up. Each listing displays the date of the last update.
