Stay in the Maremma
Tosco's wordHere, you climb gently toward Mount Amiata, and the village reveals itself house by house, perched above the chestnut groves and wooded slopes. In the evening, golden light slides over the old stones of the Torre Aldobrandesca, and you feel the mountain watching over everyone. My advice: set aside an evening for the Pieve delle Sante Flora e Lucilla, then head down to Santa Fiora to wander its quiet alleys.

The guide
Staying in Arcidosso means sleeping halfway up Monte Amiata, among chestnut trees and gray stone roofs, with evening falling earlier and cooler than on the plain. It isn't a base for everyone, and it's better to know that before booking. Here, the night is tied to an activity: a hike, a tasting, an outing in the forest. I'll tell you who it suits, where to drop your bags and how to avoid exhausting yourself on the road.
Arcidosso is a village on the slopes of Monte Amiata, whose summit rises to 1,738 m. The air smells of wood and moss, the lanes climb, and the chestnut groves begin almost at the edge of the houses. The Castagna del Monte Amiata IGP comes from those trees.
In summer, the altitude's coolness contrasts with the Maremma coast, where you look for shade by ten in the morning. If you're fleeing the heat, this is your place.
Keep going if you want the sea, nightlife or a stay without a car. In the evening, the village empties early, and distances are covered on mountain hairpin bends. For visiting the old town itself, the site already has its own article: here, we're talking about sleeping.
The choice is slim and rural. There is no hotel in the village of Arcidosso: you sleep in the countryside, in an agriturismo, a characterful guesthouse, a refuge or under canvas. So forget the idea of walking down to the café from your room. You sleep outside, you drive back.
The couple who wants silence will choose the Castello delle Fornaci, in Arcidosso, which plays the card of an intimate refuge, far from the beaten track. It's the right move for a quiet evening and a waking up in the crisp air.
I Rondinelli, also in Arcidosso, sits in a setting of hills and ancient forests. You open the door and you're already in the landscape: ideal for setting off on foot without taking the car again. Children gain space, parents gain a calm you don't find roadside.
For a quiet evening, the Castello's table and that of I Rondinelli are only a few minutes' drive apart, with no long night road.
The safari tents of Camping Lucherino, in Cinigiano, offer glamping where you wake to birdsong. Note: Cinigiano is in the Maremma, lower than the village, so a little milder at night, but it's a stopover rather than a true base for the Amiata. The campsite offers three safari tent variants, including the "Garden" and "Valley" versions. The refuge, on the other hand, is chosen for a summit hike starting at dawn.
Two nights are enough to get a feel for Arcidosso: the village, the chestnut trees, a meal, a stroll. Three to four nights give you access to the mountain in depth. Beyond that, the Amiata simply becomes your base for the inland Maremma.
Here's how I would split four nights, with one outing per day:
The fourth day stays free. Keep it for the rain, or for doing nothing under a chestnut tree. Many people forget to plan for this breathing space.
In Arcidosso, the reference table is La Brusta: Tuscan and Maremman cooking without fuss, the kind that doesn't treat the customer like a fool. That's where I send you on your arrival evening, when you don't feel like driving far.
The rest comes from outings: green, peppery olive oil from Seggiano, bottles from Roccalbegna, chestnuts in season. Leave room in the trunk.
Without a car, Arcidosso and its surroundings don't work. Mountain roads are winding, the villages are scattered, and a snowy winter calls for caution. Group by slope: the Roccalbegna day on one side, the wildlife park and summit day on the other. Don't zigzag.
If you're tempted to add the northern spas, check the map first. Bagni di San Filippo, a hamlet in Castiglione d'Orcia, offers volcanic water between 48 °C and 52 °C, and the Fosso Bianco there is free. Bagno Vignoni, on the other hand, is another thermal hamlet, in San Quirico d'Orcia, across the valley: count a full day's round trip from Arcidosso.
Summer suits hikers and anyone escaping the coast: shaded trails, cool nights. June is cheaper than the other months, according to price comparison sites, and remains a good compromise.
In October, everything revolves around the Castagna in Festa, with the medieval cellars open. Book early, as capacity is limited and rooms go fast. The smell of roasted chestnuts in the streets is worth the trip.
A snowy winter changes the stay: cold light, a silent village. It's a season for those who like it, not for anyone counting on terraces.
Three decisions to make before you lock in your ticket. One: you have a car, otherwise change destination. Two: the accommodation has parking, essential in the countryside and especially in winter. Three: your bed is not far from your first activity, because on these roads, a few kilometers count double.
To start, choose your season, then the accommodation that goes with it. Then book the hiking day to the summit, and the rest will follow.

Frequently asked questions
Answers drawn from our rated listings around Arcidosso, figures updated daily.
From Florence, allow about 2 h 24 min of driving to reach Arcidosso, making it the shortest arrival point; from Rome, Ciampino (2 h 54) remains faster than Fiumicino (3 h 04). Pisa (2 h 43) is an intermediate option if your flight is cheaper there.
To choose, look mainly at what you plan to do on site: if you want to get around between the villages and nearby places, a car is almost essential. The bus from Grosseto only runs on weekdays, with 9 departures a day, which greatly limits outings on weekends.
Once you arrive, you can check the map of Arcidosso to spot places within 8 km and group your visits by area. The two best-rated agriturismos are I Rondinelli and Castello delle Fornaci, if you want to sleep in the countryside.
Yes, it's possible: from Grosseto station, there are 9 departures a day on weekdays, which allows you to reach Arcidosso without a car. But once on site, a car remains much more practical for getting around, since many interesting places are in the surroundings and local connections are less frequent.
If you travel by bus, make sure to match your arrival and departure with the timetables before booking your accommodation, and check them on site, as they may vary by season. To choose where to stay, look at the agriturismos in Arcidosso : they are often isolated establishments in the countryside, so it's better to know how you'll get around before settling in.
Honest limitation: the bus serves the main town well, but for places in the surroundings, such as the Parco della Peschiera or the villages of Mount Amiata, a car will save you a lot of time.
To sleep in the countryside, choose I Rondinelli si tu veux la meilleure note du secteur : il obtient 6.6 sur 10, contre 6.4 pour Castello delle Fornaci. Both are agriturismos, so farms where you stay in the heart of the countryside, but the rating gap is small and isn't enough to decide on its own.
To tell them apart, look at what matters for your stay: the type of accommodation, how close Arcidosso is if you plan to get around on foot or by bus, and your budget. Check both listings and compare their rates against your dates, since prices vary by season. Across the whole village, there are two listed agriturismos : so you can directly compare these two addresses without searching elsewhere.
An honest limitation: our ratings are based on analyzing reviews and available information, not on visits by our editorial team. Check access conditions and facilities with each establishment before booking.
To budget well, keep in mind that this price is an indication for a full meal and does not necessarily include drinks. If you want to compare places to stay, check the agriturismo listings: they give a rating and a nightly price, which helps you plan your stay around the meal. Also remember to check opening days before going, as a small village spot may close on certain days.
Favor autumn, and more specifically October: it's the season when local festivals linked to chestnuts and porcini mushroom gathering punctuate the region, and when the surrounding trails are most pleasant to walk. Spring remains a good alternative if you're looking for less busy paths and mild temperatures.
For walks, the most useful thing is to time your stay around the events that interest you. Check festival dates before booking, as they change from year to year, and choose accommodation close to the trails or area you want to explore. From our selection, the agriturismos in Arcidosso let you sleep in the countryside, such as Agriturismo I Rondinelli, well rated by travelers.
A limitation to keep in mind: the ratings we display are based on analyzing reviews and available information, not on visits by our editorial team. So check directly with the establishment for availability and seasonal trail access conditions.
