Amiata

Amiata

The Amiata is the highest massif in Southern Tuscany, an extinct volcano that rises to 1,738 meters at Monte Amiata. You'll see it loom up to the northeast of the Maremma, and that's where you should go: the chestnut and beech forests, the springs, the hilltop villages like Santa Fiora or Arcidosso. In summer, it's where you go to breathe when the plain is scorching. What matters to you is that the air there is noticeably cooler than in Grosseto or Massa Marittima, and you can still find real village festivals and mountain produce.
