Where is Castel del Piano located on Mount Amiata?

Castel del Piano is located on the southwestern slope of Mount Amiata, in the province of Grosseto, in Tuscany : it is a mountain town, but not a village perched at the summit. Its center is at about 637 meters above sea level, while the peak of Amiata reaches 1 738 mètres. From the town, the road climbs toward the beech woods and the mountain areas; allow about 14 km to the summit, depending on the route chosen.

To get your bearings, Castel del Piano belongs to the Grosseto side of Amiata, between the inland Maremma and the hills that open toward the Val d'Orcia. It is a good base if you want to explore the villages of the massif without staying in the high-altitude resorts. On the other hand, if you are looking for snow or ski lift departure points, you will need to continue up toward the Macinaie or Prato della Contessa areas: they are not in the village center. Castel del Piano is also known for its horse palio, held on the main square; you can read more about it here: the Palio di Castel del Piano.

The contrast between the excitement of the Palio and the atmosphere of the Amiata woods gives this corner a lovely double rhythm; keep a day free of plans to enjoy it.
