Stay in the Maremma
Tosco's wordHere, the light slides over the harbor of Porto Ercole, where the boats gently tug at their moorings while the Spanish fortresses watch over the bay. You'll feel the salty air mingling with the smell of warm bread early in the morning. My advice: go at sunset, from the ramparts, and let the Orbetello lagoons light up below.

The guide
Porto Ercole sits in a cove, with its ochre houses stacked beneath three fortresses and its masts clinking as soon as the wind picks up. It's a port where parking is hard, where you climb a lot, and where you have dinner with your feet almost in the water. To stay in Porto Ercole, you first need to know what you're coming for. This guide cuts through: who the base suits, which area to choose, how many nights to plan, and how to split your days so you don't stay stuck on the quay.
Porto Ercole is an excellent base for a week focused on the sea and the fortresses. It's a poor choice in peak summer if you're trying to avoid crowds, or if climbing stairs with a suitcase is a problem for you.
The village is the size of a small town, and it fills up quickly when the yachts arrive. In the evening, the harbor terraces overflow and the alleys ring with conversations in five languages.
I recommend Porto Ercole if you want a single address to sleep, swim, walk between ramparts and have dinner without getting back in the car. I advise against it if you dream of a silent countryside with no neighbors: for that, look further inland.
A couple who enjoys wandering will find their place in the village: you step out, follow the quay, climb toward the Rocca. The alleys smell of fried food and drying laundry. Some accommodations are reached by 57 or 90 steps, and this detail filters the audience more reliably than any price.
A family benefits if it chooses a house with a pool or beach access. Houses for several travelers lower the cost per person, which matters in a port known for being chic. A small budget will find its balance off-season and by sharing an entire rental.
Travelers with reduced mobility won't find their way here, nor will those who want a quiet summer: the chic port becomes expensive and crowded.
The best neighborhood depends on your relationship with the car. Here's how I decide, area by area.
This is the choice for atmosphere. La Casetta in Piazza offers a direct view of the sea, and Luna D'Argento Apartment is right in the heart of the town. Brezza Marina Guest House, simple and practical on Piazza Giovanni XXIII, suits you if you want a guesthouse without frills.
A special case: Exclusive House Inside Historic Fortress, set inside the Rocca Aldobrandesca. You sleep within the very walls you would otherwise visit, a unique experience that costs you in logistics, with stones, slopes and little space for luggage.
On the Cala Galera side, a car becomes essential. The Villa panoramica, a standalone property, looks out over the sea and the marina. You gain calm and parking, you lose the evening stroll on foot.
Villa Cala Contessa, a large private villa with a pool, opens directly onto the Giannella beach. The coves of Mare Morto, 300 m away, and Cannelle, 1 km away, are close to some villas in this sector.
On the coastal strip, Masia Mariel Playa welcomes adults only. To Orbetello, Antica Dimora, a three-star hotel in the historic center, places you near the lagoons, as does Vistalaguna with its water view. Outside summer, it's often simpler and cheaper than the port.
In the countryside, Country Relais La Mortella, above Porto Santo Stefano, plays the card of a haven of peace. The Agriturismo Pimpinnacolo smells of rosemary and sea salt. Agriturismos are few: book early, or you'll get whatever is left.
Two to three nights are enough for the village and the sea. Move to four or five if you add a day of diving and a day in the Maremma. Always keep a half-day buffer: the wind can cancel sea outings.
Here's how I would split the days, without overloading you:
Summer keeps everything open, but the village is expensive and crowded. The roads to the Torre di Capo d’Uomo and the coves are narrow: drive slowly in July and August, because you will meet cars that won't back up.
The shoulder season gives you a more authentic village, where the fishermen return to the quay. You pay for that calm with reduced services: some restaurants close, and some beach clubs too. I prefer to come outside the busy weekends, when the light is low and the terraces aren't packed.
The quayside restaurants all look alike, with their tablecloths and laminated menus. Two addresses stand out from the rest, each for a different reason.
Il Gambero Rosso serves seafood facing the harbor, with impeccable service: this is the place for a dinner that matters. La Terrazza & Lounge Bar occupies a house perched above the town, perfect for the hour when the harbor lights up. For a budget option, head up into the side streets and choose the small tables where locals eat rather than the seafront.
In high season, book your evening meal ahead. Otherwise you'll eat at ten o'clock or not at all.
Porto Ercole is your anchor: everything is within an hour. Porto Santo Stefano, the departure point for the Giglio, is about 10 minutes away by car.
The Orbetello lagoons offer a flat landscape full of birds, the opposite of the harbor. The ruins of Cosa and the Cosa Promontory bring an Etruscan and Roman contrast. When it rains or the beaches fill up, head inland or to the fortresses: the thick stone and cool rooms will save the day.
Keep Cosa as your wildcard: you climb the promontory, walk among the stones, and come back feeling you've changed countries.
A car is useful for Cala Galera and the hilltop areas. In the village, it becomes a burden. If you stay in the old town, park once and forget about it.
Before you pay, run through this checklist:
Start by choosing between the village on foot and the hills by car: it's the only decision that changes everything else. The accommodation will come next, almost on its own.

Frequently asked questions
Answers drawn from our rated addresses around Porto Ercole, figures updated daily.
Expect an average of around €373 a night in Porto Ercole, with a floor starting at €174 for a basic room. Across the 186 places listed in our selection, this median is a useful benchmark for setting your budget: below it, you'll mostly find simple rooms and an arrival in the low season; above it, you move into suites and villas with a terrace.
To bring the bill down without sacrificing comfort, look at the agriturismos in the surrounding countryside: the two we follow are more affordable than the center, and you gain quiet. If you want the village on foot, town-center apartments often offer better value than hotels. Always compare the total price, breakfast and tourist tax included, before you choose.
For most travelers, a car is the simplest option: from Rome Ciampino it takes about 2 h to 1 h 11 min of driving, and from Florence 3 h to 3 h 03 min. The bus from Grosseto station only runs 5 departures a day on weekdays, which forces you to plan your trips around tight schedules and makes evening outings or last-minute excursions difficult.
If you don't have a car, plan to stay in one place rather than making back-and-forth trips, and choose accommodation close to the center so you can do without transport. To find where to sleep without a car, look at our selection ofaccommodation in Porto Ercole and filter by location. If you drive, renting a vehicle at the airport remains the most flexible way to also reach the places to visit nearby.
An honest caveat: bus timetables can change, so check them directly with the operator before booking your ticket.
Account two to three days to see the essentials: the village and its fortress, the Orbetello lagoons, the ruins of Cosa, and the Argentario promontory. There are 22 sights within 8 km, so the challenge isn't finding what to see but not trying to do everything in one day. For the lagoons, the Feniglia and Cosa, plan half a day each, and keep one day free for the sea.
What changes the pace is how you get around. Without a car, the bus from Grosseto offers only 5 departures a day on weekdays, so organize your trips around those times and limit yourself to two distant outings. With a car, you can chain the lagoons and ruins in the same morning. Look at the highly rated addresses on the map to anchor your days: the places to stay in the village there are plenty, and you can choose a starting point close to what you want to see first.
Honest caveat: these durations are a pace estimate, not a measurement of each site. If you want to rent a boat or do a sea activity, add half a day, since time slots and weather can change the program.
For a stay in Porto Ercole, choose a hotel in the town center if you want flexibility: the offer includes 186 accommodations versus only 2 agriturismos, so you have far more choice of prices and dates. Accommodations start at €174, with a median price around €373, while agriturismos range between €304 and €351.
The agriturismo has a real advantage if you want quiet and a countryside setting, with a car essential for getting around. The town, on the other hand, lets you walk to restaurants and the harbor without driving. For an agriturismo, check car access and grocery supplies, since everything is farther away.
If you're undecided, first look at Antica Dimora, bien notée à 7.9/10 en centre, ou Country Relais La Mortella if you prefer the countryside. The ratings reflect our analysis of reviews, not a test conducted by our editorial team.
To eat well in Porto Ercole without breaking the bank, the best value is at Ugo's Pub, where a meal starts at €20, but if you want the best-rated table on the list, choose Il Gambero Rosso (note 8.1), autour de 40 € par personne.
Honest limit: our selection includes only three restaurants, so your choice will be limited. If you want more options, ask locals on site for the places they frequent, which often change from one season to the next.
For a modest budget, renting a small boat is the most cost-effective option: offers start at €180, with a median price around €314 among the 39 boats listed. Compare the price to the number of people and the duration, since a day boat often costs less than two guided activities.
If you want a more guided day, activities like diving or e-bike adventures between the Orbetello lagoon and the ramparts are worth considering. Check reviews and each provider's rating before booking, and ask what's included (equipment, fuel, skipper). La Mortella or Pimpinnacolo, already well rated for accommodation, can also serve as a base for organizing an outing.
The honest limit: our ratings come from analyzing reviews and available information, not on-site testing, and weather conditions can cancel a sea outing. Plan a backup option.
