Stay in the Maremma

Staying in Saturnia

Tosco's wordHere, the sulfurous water steams gently between the rocks, and the Mulino waterfalls tumble in white cascades into warm pools. In the evening the cicadas fall silent and the smell of sulfur mingles with that of the maquis. My advice: go down to the Gorello stream at sunrise, before everyone else, and let the warm water carry you.

The guide

Staying in Saturnia: where to sleep near the thermal baths and how many nights to plan

Staying in Saturnia means first accepting that the village is not the main attraction. It consists of a few alleys, a square, a handful of pale stone façades. What matters is the hot water rising from the ground a few minutes away, and the Maremma countryside around it: cork oaks, vineyards, white roads, the smell of sulfur when the wind shifts. I advise you to choose your bed according to this countryside, not the waterfalls. This guide helps you decide where to sleep, in what type of accommodation, and for how long.

Is Saturnia the right base for you?

Saturnia suits you if you want hot springs, quiet, and a starting point for exploring the Maremma. It suits someone who likes to get up early, come home at nightfall and have dinner without rushing. It disappoints someone expecting bars open late and lively alleys after dinner.

It also disappoints anyone without a car. The springs, the agriturismi and the neighboring villages are scattered along country roads, and nothing really links them together. Without a car, you make do with the village and its surroundings.

In the evening the square empties quickly. You hear the cicadas, sometimes a dog in the distance. For me, that is the main argument.

Sleeping a few kilometers from the springs rather than on the edge

For most travelers, sleeping a few kilometers from the springs is better than sleeping right beside them. You gain calm and better value for money, and you pay for that gain with car journeys. A quarter of an hour's drive in the morning is a small price for waking up among the olive trees.

In the village

Camere Dei Magi is an unpretentious pied-à-terre at €100 a night. Tellus Saturnia is a small 8-room hotel right in the centre, on a human scale.

You hear footsteps on the cobblestones and shutters banging in the morning. It is lively on a small scale, nothing more.

Near the thermal baths, but not in the village

Hotel La Fonte Del Cerro, a three-star well placed for the baths, costs €237 a night: you pay for the proximity. The resort Terme di Saturnia Natural Spa & Golf, five-star, combines thermal baths and golf, for those who want everything in one place.

A few kilometers away

Poggio Capanne, Catabbio, Semproniano, Manciano: this is where I would tell you to look first. At Poggio Capanne, Ermes Suite is an apartment five minutes by car from the baths, at €119 a night. At Semproniano, Guest House Il Borgo Di Sempronio is an albergo diffuso in a medieval setting: you sleep among ancient stones, not in a standard room.

Agriturismo, villa or hotel: choose according to your style

The agriturismo gives you the countryside and local cooking. The villa or apartment gives you independence. The hotel gives you the simplicity of service. None is better in absolute terms; they answer three different ways of travelling.

Agriturismo Sugheretello is isolated at the end of a dirt track lined with cypresses, far from everything and magnificent for that very reason. Vignagrande puts you among vines, wild thyme and cicadas. Mandorlo, with its thousand-year-old olive tree on red earth, has a very strong personality. Rates are not displayed in advance: ask for them directly.

For independence, villas and apartments range from €100 to €252 a night. You shop, you cook, you dine on your terrace. It is the option I prefer for a stay of more than three nights.

Three nights, not much more

Two nights are enough for the springs and one outing. Three nights make the right rhythm: one day for the water, one day for the villages, one day without a plan. Beyond four, the Maremma should become the real subject, otherwise you go round in circles among the same basins.

If you have a week, do not stay in the same place the whole week. Sleep two or three nights here, then move on to Semproniano or to the coast. It is more tiring with luggage, but richer in landscapes.

The Mulino waterfalls, early in the morning or late in the day

The Cascate del Mulino are open to the public free of charge all year round. The water emerges at 37.5 °C and fills open-air pools. This free access explains the crowds, especially in summer, at weekends and in the middle of the day.

Early morning and late afternoon are calmer. The municipality of Manciano regulates access and parking in high season. Outside summer, warm water in cool air is a pleasure of its own, with steam rising off the white rock.

If you prefer developed pools, the Terme di Saturnia can be visited with a Day SPA ticket, without staying at the resort.

Eating on site requires a plan

Saturnia is not a gastronomic destination. The only restaurant I recommend in the village is Bacco & Cerere 2.0, Italian cooking at mid-range prices.

Three options are open to you. You sleep at an agriturismo and dine at the farm table, with what comes from the kitchen garden. You rent an apartment and cook. Or you book a firm reservation at a place for one evening and stick to it. Without a plan, you end up at nine in the evening in front of closed shutters.

Spend your days around the area without racking up the miles

Sovana is within easy driving distance, and its Necropolis takes about half a day. The Via Cava del Cavone, a narrow gully carved into the tufa, has you walking between high, cool walls. Manciano rounds out the loop with its lanes and shops.

How to decide, in practical terms

Start by fixing the number of nights, then the area, and only then the type of accommodation. Write down two or three addresses, and confirm their prices directly before locking in your dates.

My method: first book a place at Poggio Capanne or in the countryside, then add a night somewhere else if you get bored.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about a stay in Saturnia

Answers drawn from our rated addresses around Saturnia, figures updated daily.

How much does a night in Saturnia cost on average, and where can you stay for less?

Count from 100 € per night in a classic lodging in Saturnia, with a median around 180 €, and from 108 € at an agriturismo, where the median climbs to 272 €. To sleep for less, look at the lodgings first (see the lodgings in Saturnia): of the 25 addresses listed, some are well rated for a modest price, such as Cozy villa surrounded by olive trees, at €159 a night.

What makes the difference is the season and the length of your stay: rates vary sharply between high and low season, and booking early remains the best way to keep the bill down. If you want a more rural experience, agriturismos (see the agriturismos) are more expensive on average, but some, such as Vignagrande Agriturismo at €108, start at a price close to the lodgings. These figures are indicative ranges drawn from our analysis of listings, not guaranteed rates.

Should you stay in Saturnia itself or at an agriturismo in the countryside?

For most travelers, stay in the village itself if you want to walk to the restaurants, the baths and the waterfalls, and choose an agriturismo if you come for the quiet, the pool and the car at your disposal. Saturnia has 25 lodgings, with prices starting around €100 a night, versus 3 agriturismos from €108, with a median of €272 a night. In other words, the choice depends mostly on your style of stay and your budget, not on distance.

In practice, in the village you get around on foot, but you have less space and only one listed restaurant. In the countryside, agriturismos offer more privacy and views over the olive groves, but you will depend on your car for everything, including the springs. Look at the ratings: the best-rated agriturismos, such as Agriturismo Sugheretello, are pricier, while Vignagrande Agriturismo is more affordable. An honest caveat: our ratings rest on the analysis of reviews and available information, not on visits by our editorial team.

Which lodgings in Saturnia are rated best by travelers?

Choose according to what you are looking for: the rating alone is not enough, so also look at the type of lodging. A countryside agriturismo, like the Sugheretello, offers calm and a real immersion in the Maremma, but you need a car to reach the village and the springs. A guest house in the village lets you do everything on foot. Read the latest reviews to check cleanliness and breakfast, which often make the difference between two establishments with similar scores.

These ratings come from the analysis of reviews and available information, and do not reflect a visit by our editorial team. They change over time, so check availability and the actual rate when you book.

How many days should you plan to enjoy Saturnia and its surroundings?

Account 2 to 3 days for Saturnia: that is the time needed to see the 7 places within 8 km and enjoy part of the 12 listed activities without rushing. One day is enough for the village and the waterfalls, but you will do better to keep half a day for the thermal springs, which are best visited early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

To plan your stay, first decide where you will sleep: a night at a countryside agriturismo or in a village lodging changes your pace. The best-rated lodgings have rates that vary a lot by season, so check availability before fixing your dates. If you are coming by car from an airport, also allow for the driving time on your first day.

Which activities to combine in Saturnia: an e-bike ride or a swim at the springs?

The two combine very well: the e-bike ride in the morning, while it is still cool, then a swim at the springs late in the day. The first shows you the landscape and local flavors, the second lets you unwind.

The e-bike ride is offered with panoramic views and a tasting of local products; it is rated E-bike Ride in Saturnia. For the swim, Swimming and relaxation at the Saturnia springs is the most cited, alongside the offer Relaxation and wellness at the thermal springs. Choose according to whether you want movement or rest.

Check opening hours and book before you leave, especially in high season, since access to the springs can be limited. Our ratings rest on the analysis of reviews and available information, not on visits by our editorial team.
