In Saturnia, the most beautiful thing is the Cascate del Mulino : natural travertine pools where the turquoise thermal water cascades in small waterfalls, with steam when the air is cool. Swimming there is free and the site is accessible all year round. The water stays around 37.5 °C, but it smells of sulfur — it's not discreet — and the rocks can be slippery. It's not a sea beach: Saturnia is located in the hinterland of the Maremma. In summer and at midday hours, it can be very crowded; early in the morning or late in the day, the atmosphere is generally calmer.
Around the baths, you'll find the hills of the Maremma and small country roads. The village of Saturnia, perched on a hill, is worth visiting for a short stroll, while Montemerano, a few kilometers away, is a lovely detour for its alleys and its square. Plan at least 1 to 2 hours time to swim without rushing, more if you also want to wander around the surroundings. Access to the pools is free, but check the parking conditions before leaving and bring a towel, sandals that hold well on your feet, and water to drink.
