How do the free thermal springs of Saturnia work?

The Cascate del Mulino, also called Cascate del Gorello, are natural pools with free and open access, no ticket or reservation required, open all year round. The sulfurous water is around 37 °C. You can swim there in the pools carved into the travertine, but it is not a developed spa facility: the rocks are slippery and the smell of sulfur is quite noticeable. The site is located along the SP10, near Saturnia, in the municipality of Manciano.

The parking is separate from the access to the pools: an area is nearby, but its conditions and rates may vary. Check the signs on site and plan for a bit of walking; the car parking is indicated at about 300 m. To avoid the biggest crowds, aim for early morning or the end of the day, especially on weekends and in summer. Bring water sandals, a towel and a bag for your belongings; the facilities on site are limited and some, like the showers, may be paid. If you are looking for changing rooms, supervised pools or more amenities, that is the paid thermal park of Terme di Saturnia, not the free waterfalls.

At the Cascate del Mulino, don't spend all your time framing the perfect photo: also take the time to follow with your eyes the shapes drawn by the water in the travertine.
