Arcidosso is best known for its Rocca Aldobrandesca, its history linked to Monte Amiata and the chestnut that shapes local life. The castle overlooks the old town: it is the most visible landmark and the main attraction of a stroll through its lanes. The village is also associated with David Lazzaretti, a preacher of the nineteenthe century whose religious movement, the giurisdavidismo, left its mark on the region. To understand this less expected side, you can visit the study centre dedicated to him in the castle, if its opening hours match your visit.
Arcidosso lies on the slopes of Monte Amiata, in a region of forests and mountain villages, rather than in the Tuscany of large wine estates. The Monte Amiata chestnut, protected by a geographical indication, is one of its emblematic products; autumn, at harvest time, is the liveliest period around the festivals dedicated to the chestnut, whose dates vary from year to year. You can also discover the MACO, a museum of Oriental art and culture linked to the Tibetan community of Merigar West, established in the area since the 1980s. Arcidosso remains a quiet village: plan for a stop of a few hours rather than a full day if you do not intend to hike or visit other villages of the massif.
