Grosseto, the capital of the Maremma behind its hexagonal Medici walls, has the densest and most varied dining scene in the entire region — logical for a city of more than 80,000 inhabitants that nevertheless remains largely overlooked by the classic tourist circuits. You'll find family trattorias in the historic center as well as more contemporary spots in the newer districts, with a real concentration of quality Tuscan and Italian cuisine at still reasonable prices.
Grosseto is also a good base for tasting the best of both Maremma worlds: the city is only 15 minutes from the beaches of Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare (and therefore fresh fish), and less than 30 minutes from the inland wine regions (Scansano, Magliano). Many restaurants in the city work with both terroirs on a single menu.
