Stay in the Maremma

Staying in Manciano

Tosco's wordHere, the Maremma takes its time: hills covered in oak trees, golden wheat fields and old stone walls that keep the morning cool. My advice: go down to the Gorello stream late in the day, when the low light makes the water more copper-colored, then stay for dinner in Montemerano to taste the local cuisine.

The guide

Staying in Manciano: the practical base between the thermal baths and the tufa villages

Manciano doesn't photograph well: a gray stone village perched on a ridge, a rocca above, narrow streets that go dark early. Staying in Manciano means making a different bet than the one postcards make. You unpack once, you empty your bag once, and you set off each morning in a different direction. In the evening, you return to a square where you mostly hear shutters and the voices of neighbors. I'll tell you straight away what it's like, who it works for and who it doesn't.

Staying in Manciano: an ideal base

Manciano is the most practical base in southern Maremma, because it sits right in the middle of everything. Saturnia and the Cascate del Mulino are very close. Pitigliano and the tufa villages are within driving distance. Capalbio is about 28 km away, and the Argentario about 30 minutes.

This crossroads is the only real argument, but it carries a lot of weight. You don't have to repack every two days, and you can choose your direction according to the wind, the heat or your tiredness. Thermal baths in the morning, a tufa village in the afternoon, the sea on another day: the base never moves.

One condition, and it is non-negotiable: a car. Without it, the plan falls apart. Pick it up on arrival, with a full tank before heading into the countryside, because gas stations are rarer than you think. To land, consider Rome Fiumicino or Pisa.

Who Manciano doesn't work for

If you want bars open at midnight, keep moving. Manciano has life during the day, shops, restaurants, but in the evening the village shuts down early. You have dinner, walk ten minutes, and go to sleep.

No beach within walking distance either, and a morning swim before breakfast doesn't exist here. If that's your dream, look instead toward Castiglione della Pescaia or Capalbio, where the sea is within sandal distance.

Is Manciano doable without a car?

Barely. Public transport is limited, and the sites you've come to see are scattered across the countryside. The village itself can be explored on foot, its surroundings cannot.

If you really don't have a car, the Hotel Rossi is the logical choice: central, in the heart of the village. You'll have its restaurants and shops right at your feet, but you'll remain confined to that perimeter.

Choosing your area before your address

Before comparing rooms, decide what setting you want to wake up in. There are three options, and they don't resemble each other.

Within the village: everything on foot

Sleeping inside the walls means having the Rocca Aldobrandesca above your head and coffee three minutes away. In the morning, you hear the bells and the delivery vans climbing the street. Pietre Antiche Loft, a recently renovated apartment in the village, suits those who want to do some cooking and walk home after dinner.

For a quiet drink, head to Montemerano, ranked among The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy. The Piazza del Castello is enough for that: the stone cooling down, nobody shouting.

In the countryside: silence, but by car

This is where most of the options are. Some agriturismos are at the end of a dirt track, and your car will kick up dust for several hundred meters. Podere i Sodi, for example, is reached by a winding road and offers a wilder Maremma. In the evening, you hear only crickets and, from afar, a farm dog.

Think about your groceries before heading up: once you're back, you won't come down again for a forgotten loaf of bread.

Near the thermal baths, sleeping on the Saturnia side

If the thermal baths are your reason for coming, sleep on the Saturnia side or in an agriturismo close to the waterfalls. Agriturismo Le Cascatelle plays that card: you're near hot water without being in the crowds. The Cascate del Mulino are free to access; the water smells of sulfur, steam drifts over the pools, and the white rock is slippery underfoot.

Keep this plan for the start or end of the day, when the light is low.

Agriturismo, guesthouse or thermal resort

The agriturismo offers the best value in the area, by far. For two with breakfast, expect a noticeably gentler price range than on the Castiglione della Pescaia coast. It's one of the real reasons to sleep here rather than by the water.

For a farm table d'hôte, Agriturismo Piccioli sets up its Maremman countryside décor. Agriturismo Bio Il Torrione will appeal to those who want to eat organic without making it a religion. For something more intimate, Roberto, Casale Vita Nova is a human-scale guesthouse.

At the other end of the scale, the Terme di Saturnia Resort sells a luxury thermal stay, at a noticeably higher budget. It's a different kind of trip: you no longer roam around, you stay in the pools.

In high season, book early, otherwise only the rooms nobody wanted are left.

Manciano or the coast?

If your priority is the beach every day, sleep on the coast, in Castiglione della Pescaia or at Podere L’olmaia, in Capalbio, an agriturismo closer to the sea. If you want to alternate spas, villages and swims, Manciano wins.

How many nights to plan according to the itinerary

Two full days are enough for the essentials. One day for Saturnia and its waterfalls, one day for Pitigliano and the tuff villages. You'll have seen the backbone of the region, and you'll leave without regret.

With more time, add the sea: a day at the Argentario or in Capalbio, depending on your taste for rock or sand. Then keep one slow day: a tasting of natural wines and olive oil at Fattoria La Maliosa, or an electric bike ride with a picnic in Saturnia. In the evening, dine at Le Chiuse, an Italian table with no tourist traps.

Don't fill every morning. The loops are short, and the pleasure of this base is precisely coming back early.

Season: when to come

July and August push prices up, especially around August 15. You pay more for a room where it's hotter, among more crowds. I recommend spring or autumn: that's the best window for the spas, cycling and vineyards. Warm water is a pleasure, fresh air too, and the trails aren't ovens.

Start by booking your agriturismo, then schedule a single loop, the one to Saturnia, for your first morning. The rest will be decided over breakfast.

Your questions about a stay in Manciano

Answers drawn from our rated addresses around Manciano, figures updated daily.

How many days should you plan to discover Manciano and its surroundings?

Account two full days to see Manciano and its surroundings without rushing. The village can be visited in half a day, but the seven sites within 8 km (Saturnia, the Cascate del Mulino, the Gorello Stream, Montemerano and the Terme di Saturnia) each need time, especially if you want to swim or hike. A single day would give you only a glimpse; three days let you add a tasting or an activity without rushing.

To organize your time, keep one day for the waters and villages (Saturnia in the morning, Montemerano in the afternoon), and a second for wine and countryside. Tastings are numerous (see the tastings in Manciano) and an activity such as the horseback ride at Fattoria La Maliosa can fill half a day. If you don't have a car, know that there are only a few buses a day from Grosseto on weekdays: this severely limits back-and-forth trips between sites, and it's better to plan for a vehicle.

What is the best option for dinner in Manciano without exceeding €35?

To dine in Manciano without exceeding €35, the safest choice is Le Chiuse, la mieux notée de la sélection à 8.3 et à 31 €. The village's six restaurants start at €25 and their median price is €31, so there is room, but not all of them stay within it.

First check the price shown on the listing, which corresponds to a typical meal and not the most expensive menu.

Which activities can you combine with a stay in Manciano for a day off the beaten track?

For a day off the beaten track in Manciano, combine a horseback ride at Fattoria La Maliosa (note 7.1) avec un atelier culinaire Maremma sur la cueillette d'herbes sauvages et les tagliatelles (note 6.9). Only 2 activities are listed here, so the choice is limited: the ride in the morning, the workshop in the afternoon, a logical combination that fits within one day.

For the rest of the day, you can also stop for lunch at the Le Chiuse, avec une note de 8.3 et un prix autour de 31 €, ou dans l'une des 6 adresses de the restaurant selection. For a tasting, tastings in Manciano are numerous (27), but choose just one for the day to stay clear-headed on the road.
