Stay in the Maremma
Tosco's wordHere, the sea and the marshes share the landscape: you walk between the reeds of the Diaccia Botrona, where the waterbirds make their racket, then climb toward the old hilltop village above the rooftops. The Forte delle Rocchette, perched on its promontory, watches the coast like an old sentinel. My tip: save one evening to walk back up to the old town at sunset, when the alleys empty out and the light gilds the façades.

The guide
Staying in Castiglione della Pescaia means sleeping between a harbor where fishing boats still come back every day, a medieval village perched on its hill and pine forests that run down to the sand. It is a seaside base, designed for families and beach days. It is not the starting point for the wild interior of the tufa, and it is better to know this before choosing a bed. This guide helps you decide the area first, then the accommodation, because that is the order in which a stay gets decided.
Castiglione is the most complete seaside resort in the area. An active fishing harbor, a hilltop village, pine forests and beaches all fit within the same perimeter. For a week of swimming, bike rides and dinners facing the water, you don't need to look elsewhere.
The trap is to see it as an all-purpose base camp. Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana are too far east to return to every evening without spending your days behind the wheel. If your dream is the tufa cliffs and the Vie Cave, settle closer to them.
If you want the sea first and a bit of countryside on top, you are in the right place.
The type of lodging matters less than where it is. The area determines the noise, parking, what you do on foot, and when you take the car keys out.
In the village, everything is done on your legs: the ramp up to the castle, the quays where the nets dry, the terraces that light up in the evening. The noise is part of the package, with the comings and goings of boats and late conversations on the quay. Parking, on the other hand, has to be planned ahead: in season, circling for a spot wastes a good quarter of an hour.
For an apartment here, Appartamenti Villa Ancora has a sea that lulls the nights. It is an address for those who want the center under their feet.
Further south, the atmosphere changes: sand, the smell of resin, bikes leaning against the tree trunks. The beaches of Rocchette and the pine forest are reachable on foot from the campground-villages. The Pavillon Bleu and the pine forests are very busy in peak season, so expect crowds once the sun is blazing.
On the other hand, shopping and outings are done by car.
When you head off toward Vetulonia, the cicadas replace the seagulls and the hills roll around you. The calm is real. The car, however, is not an option: the countryside toward Vetulonia means driving for even the smallest loaf of bread.
The range of agriturismos and campgrounds around Castiglione is wide. Hotels are rarer. That already dictates part of the choice.
For traveling with children, the coastal campground-villages are the simplest choice: the sea at the end of the path, pitches or bungalows, and reduced logistics. Camping Village Santapomata, on the seafront, is listed from 19 per night, a come-on price that buys you immediate access to the beach. Camping Village Baia Azzurra plays the family card, and Camping Village Rocchette the simple, straightforward stay.
Camping Puntala Camp & Resort is the large pine-forest campground-village, with a private beach and direct access to the sea. Count from 23 per night. Holiday villages on the coast, such as Stella del Mare Family Collection – Club del Sole, start at 33 per night and suit those who want a kids' club in high season.
If you come for authenticity, farms are your thing. Agriturismo Diaccia Botrona gives you the mist over the marshes at sunrise. Agriturismo Santagermana is rooted in the vineyards. Agriturist Prile is at the end of a cypress-lined road, in a more intimate Tuscany.
Toward Vetulonia, Agriturismo La Luciana offers hills and cicadas, and Agriturismo Casa Andreina suits a base set back from it all. Fattoria Pian Di Rocca completes this list on the countryside side. These farms are bases of calm, not beaches within walking distance.
As for hotels, the choice is limited to a handful of addresses. If you're looking for a classic inexpensive hotel in the center, don't expect a wide selection. Look instead at apartments or campsites.
Three nights is enough for a beach and harbor base: a morning on the sand, a seafood lunch, an evening on the quays, and you've covered the essentials. A week lets you branch out to the Diaccia Botrona, Vetulonia and Punta Ala. Beyond that, Massa Marittima and the tufa country come into play, but as long day trips, not as a daily habit.
The season depends on what you want to do. High season is the season of the sea and the kids' clubs at the holiday villages: the water is warm, everything is open, everything is full. The shoulder season suits the marshes, the countryside and cycling better, when the light is soft and the roads empty out.
Mother's Day in Italy falls on the second Sunday in May. Restaurants are then full of family tables: book your table if you visit at that time.
Three kinds of restaurants cover almost every case.
Valbona is a seaside restaurant, with fresh fish and the sea as its backdrop. Da Anna alle Rocchette offers calm, fresh fish and a relaxed atmosphere on the beach side. Choose one or the other depending on whether you're staying in town or in Rocchette.
La Terra di Nello, under chef Alessio Biagi, doesn't cheat on the Maremma: it's my reference table for a refined evening. Il Frantoino is rustic and generous, far from the chaos of the port. La Bitta, by the water, serves a simpler Maremman cuisine, with a view of the boats.
Molo Sedici Pizza Lab serves a pizza and a pinsa with a light crust overlooking the port: perfect for an evening without fuss. Da Ammore, simple seafood cuisine, and So Good, accessible Italian cooking, remain affordable. With kids worn out from the beach, these are stress-free options.
If you have to choose quickly, start from your evening. For atmosphere and a hassle-free meal, stay around the port, between La Bitta and Molo Sedici. To eat fish with your feet close to the sand, head to the pine grove or Rocchette, toward Da Anna alle Rocchette or Valbona. And if you want a rustic dinner, away from the center and its crowded squares, Il Frantoino is worth the drive into the countryside.
On Mother's Day weekend, call ahead before you go, especially with children at the table.
Keep only the outings that justify the drive. They fall into two moods.
On the calm side, the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve is a Ramsar wetland visited with a guide, starting from the Casa Rossa Ximenes, built in 1765. The silence there is vast, the birds are sensed more than seen. Vetulonia, the neighboring Etruscan town, is reached by car from the countryside: it's the easiest outing for adding a bit of history to a week at the beach.
On the active side, Punta Ala can be reached by self-sufficient electric bike or electric mountain bike, crossing pine forests without your legs suffering. At Marina di Grosseto, you can go sailing and swim along the coast. And if you want to taste wine in the Maremma, the vineyards are never far from the farms.
Do you need a car to stay here? It depends on your area. In the port or the village, you can do without one, provided you accept walking and sleeping near the activity. In the countryside, it's essential. The car therefore determines the area, not the other way around.

Frequently asked questions
Answers drawn from our rated addresses around Castiglione della Pescaia, figures updated daily.
Roughly count on from €19 per night for accommodation in Castiglione della Pescaia, with a median around €25: that's the level of campsites and small guesthouses. Agriturismos start at €120 and tend to hover around €286 per night, sometimes much more for high-end establishments.
To choose, first look at what you're after: a campsite like Camping Village Rocchette or Baia Azzurra Camping Village remains the best value for money if you're traveling with family or keeping things simple. An agriturismo like Agriturismo Diaccia Botrona gives you more calm and countryside, at a higher price. Always check the actual nightly rate on the listing, as it varies by season.
An honest caveat: our figures rely on the prices we've recorded and on ratings derived from analyzing reviews, not on stays we have experienced ourselves. For a stay in peak summer, plan ahead, since the cheapest spots go quickly. You'll find all the addresses in the list of accommodation in Castiglione della Pescaia.
Yes, for the best addresses it's better to book early. Agriturismos in Castiglione della Pescaia start at €120 per night, with a median around €286, but the top-rated ones go quickly, especially in high season. Among them, Agriturismo Diaccia Botrona (note 8.0) et Agriturist Prile (note 7.3) affichent tous deux un tarif à partir de 120 €.
To choose, look first at the rating, then at the distance to the places you want to see: the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve, for example, is less than 8 km from the village. Also compare the rates of all the agriturismos before you decide, because the gap between the low and high end of the range is wide.
Honest limit: our ratings are based on analyzing reviews and available information, not on visits by us, and actual availability changes from one week to the next. So check directly with the establishment before locking in your dates.
Account two to three days : that's the time needed to see the village, the beach and the nearest places without rushing. The four sites within 8 km (the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve, the village itself, the Forte delle Rocchette and the Spring Festival of Pian di Rocca) can each be easily visited in half a day, and there is room left for an activity such as an electric bike ride or a guided tour of the reserve.
If you want to stay longer, the nature reserve deserves a full morning, preferably early, when wildlife is most visible. For your budget, restaurants are affordable: you'll find meals from 15 €, and an address such as La Terra di Nello, very well rated, stays around 40 €. For accommodation, agriturismos are more expensive (median around 286 €), while campsites and simple lodgings start at 19 € per night.
Honest limit: the number of days depends mostly on how much you want to move around. If you want to rent a boat without a license, plan an extra day and a significantly higher budget, starting at 218 € per day. Choose your pace based on what you really want to do, rather than trying to tick off every place.
On average, count around 31 € per person for a meal at a restaurant in Castiglione della Pescaia, with tables starting at 15 € and a wide range depending on the setting and menu.
Among the 17 restaurants listed, prices vary a lot: you can eat simply for little, then rise noticeably for a longer meal. For good value for money, look at the list of restaurants and filter by your budget. The best-rated addresses are not necessarily the most expensive: Il Frantoino shows a very good rating for a moderate price.
Honest limit: our ratings come from analyzing reviews and available information, not from visits by the editorial team, and prices may change depending on the season. Check the menu before sitting down, especially during high season.
