Stay in the Maremma
Tosco's wordSorano clings to its tuff cliff like a stone nest, and its houses seem stacked on top of one another above the void. In the evening, the alleys smell of warm stone and voices echo off the walls. My advice: walk the Via Cava di San Rocco on foot, that path carved into the rock, then continue to Vitozza, the troglodyte city where you can wander among the caves.

The guide
Sorano clings to its tuff cliff, and in the evening, when the buses Pitigliano have long since left, you hear nothing but footsteps on the alleys and the rumble of the Lente below. Staying in Sorano means choosing a discreet base, not a showcase. You gain calm, raw rock under your feet and trails that start almost at your door. You give up a bit of city comfort. Here is how to choose between village and countryside, how long to stay, and what to combine around the fortress.
Sorano is a city of Etruscan origin carved into tuff rock, in the province of Grosseto. Together with Pitigliano and Castell'Azzara, it forms the trio of the Città del tufo. Of the three, it is the quietest.
Pitigliano, very close by, offers more services and its Piazza della Repubblica. If you want shops, many terraces and constant coming and going, sleep there.
I recommend Sorano if you plan to walk, if Vitozza and the tuff paths are your real program, and if you accept that a pharmacy or a second café won't be around the corner. It's a base for those who go out. For those who stroll from one shop to the next, it is too quiet.
Sleeping in the old town spares you the car for dinner and for the evening stroll. Castelvecchio B&B has only three rooms: it's small, intimate, and should be booked early. For a family or group stay, Casa Vacanze La Farfalla is a real holiday house, calm and far from the bustle.
In Castell'Ottieri, Appartamento al Borgo offers 35 m² for a simple stay, without frills. It's the plain option for those who spend the day outdoors.
The agriturismos are scattered around Sorano, so the car is essential. Don't expect to walk back from dinner in the village. In exchange, you get hills, nights without light and a wake-up to the crowing of roosters.
In this countryside, cascina della grotta di tufo nestles into the rock, Agriturismo il vecchio fienile looks out over the hills, and Il Cavone has few rooms. If you want to sleep outdoors, Glamping La Ghianda puts you under canvas. Cottage a Sorano adds a pool and garden: perfect if you like to come back and dive in after a day of walking. Castello Di Santa Cristina, for its part, stays outside the center.
Sovana is a different atmosphere: a village of pale stone, more polished. Sovana Hotel & Resort is a 4-star in the heart of the old town, an elegant place to stay. Albergo Scilla, 3 stars, favors medieval charm and local cuisine. Notti Etrusche a Sovana is a renovated guesthouse, a simple pied-à-terre. Sovana luxury house, finally, is a restored country house in a large park.
Choose Sovana if elegance matters more than being close to the fortress. You'll then be ten minutes by car from Sorano, not a few alleys away.
Two nights are enough for the essentials: one day for the village, another for Vitozza. It's a short weekend, without rushing.
Three to four nights is the right rhythm. You alternate walking and rest, and you leave a half-day free for a tasting or to do nothing on a country terrace. This is what I recommend to most people.
For a week, make Sorano your base camp. You make day trips to Sovana, Pitigliano, Castell'Azzara, you come back every evening to the same bed, and you end up knowing the baker.
The village itself is visited without hurry: the Masso Leopoldino for the terrace, the Orsini fortress built by the Aldobrandeschi in the 13th century and later enlarged by the Orsini, with its Museum of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and the Clock Tower whose clock still works. Half a day is enough.
The tuff trails are best done in moderate seasons. In the peak heat, the carved paths stay cool, but the climbs between two valleys become hard going. In spring and autumn, the light skims across the rock, and you walk without hurrying.
For tastings and winery visits, the hours change from season to season: check before building your day around a cellar.
Tables are few, but they hold up well. Book them, like the tastings: don't show up at eight o'clock hoping for a spot.
EnoRistrò is set in the Fortezza, with a reimagined Mediterranean cuisine: this is the table for a slightly dressier evening. L'Hosteria del Borgo, in the heart of the village, serves traditional Tuscan cooking. L'Agriristoro Il Campagnolo da Baffo offers straightforward, no-frills cooking with good value for money.
If you're sleeping in the countryside and don't want to get back behind the wheel in the evening, the Bio Agriturismo Aia del Tufo, in San Valentino, combines Tuscan cooking and accommodation in one place. You dine, then head up to bed.
Don't race from village to village. Choose two or three excursions and leave the rest.
Vitozza first: a guided trek through the lost city takes a full day of walking, among rock-cut dwellings. It's the excursion that makes Sorano worth using as a base.
Sovana next, with the Necropolis and the Via Cava di San Giuseppe, which combine into a single day. You go from Etruscan tombs to roadways carved so deep that the sky shrinks to a strip. Pitigliano and Castell'Azzara serve as a counterpoint for comparing the three cities.
The common thread is hiking and wine. A hike along Etruscan trails often ends happily with a tasting in Sorano, or a historical stroll at the Cantina della Luce. Further afield, wines from the volcanic soils of the Sassotondo estate, or a discovery of organic wines at the winery, extend the day without filling it with kilometers.
Pisa is the reference airport for getting here. Pick up a rental car as soon as you arrive: without one, you stay in the village and miss the agriturismos and the tufa cities. From Pisa, you can reach the town, but you can no longer connect Sovana, Pitigliano and Vitozza.
Start by deciding between village and countryside: the rest of your booking follows from that. Then block off your Vitozza day.

Frequently asked questions
Answers drawn from our rated listings around Sorano, figures updated daily.
Account from 100 € per night at an agriturismo and from 91 € for standard accommodation, with a median of around 184 € for hotels and 203 € for agriturismos. These figures cover 10 agriturismos and 11 accommodations listed in Sorano, but prices vary widely by season and level of comfort.
To choose, look less at the advertised price than at what the night includes: breakfast, parking, access to a pool. The agriturismos are often more expensive than the accommodations in town but offer more space and quiet in the countryside. If your budget is tight, theHotel in Sovana stays below the village hotel median.
Account two to three days to see Sorano and its surroundings without rushing: there are 13 places to visit within 8 km, from Sorano itself to the lost city of Vitozza, including the Lente River trail and the Via Cava di San Rocco. One day is enough for the village and a short loop, but you'll gain by staying longer if you want to combine walking, sightseeing and a tasting.
To set your pace, think about what appeals to you: historical hikes and guided treks each take about half a day, whereas cellars can be visited more quickly. If you're staying overnight, look at the well-rated listings, such as Sovana Hotel & Resort or Agriturismo San Giacomo, to match your stay to their availability. Honest limitation: the rating reflects reviews and our analyses, not a test by the editorial team, and distances don't replace real travel time on country roads.
For Sorano, a car is strongly recommended: the bus from Grosseto station runs only twice a day on weekdays, which greatly limits round trips to sites in the surroundings. Allow about 2 h 32 min of driving from Rome Fiumicino, or 2 h 39 min from Florence, if you arrive by plane or train.
With a vehicle, you can explore the 13 listed sites within 8 km, such as Vitozza, the Lente River Trail or the Via Cava di San Rocco, without depending on timetables. If you'd rather go without a car, book accommodation in the village itself and plan your trips around the two daily departures, bearing in mind that some sites require walking.
The best season for Sorano is spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October), because the hiking trails and historical routes can then be covered without the stifling heat of summer. If your stay revolves mainly around outdoor activities, that should be the deciding factor. Historical hikes and visits to the lost city of Vitozza involve walking, and the guided trek through the lost city is more comfortable outside the peak heat.
To decide, look at what you want to combine: outdoor activities are few (six activities listed), so book early if you're set on a specific date. Tastings and restaurants operate all year round, which makes the shoulder seasons less constraining. An honest limitation: we don't have monthly visitor data, so this advice is based on the climate and trail usage, not occupancy figures.
An honest limitation: the village has only three restaurants, so your choice is limited, and the ratings reflect the analysis of reviews and available information, not direct experience from our editorial team. Book for the evening if you want to be sure of getting a table.
For comfort, the highest-rated addresses in Sorano are Agriturismo Podere Del Lepre and Sovana Hotel & Resort, toutes deux notées 7.7 et 7.7 ; le premier démarre autour de 234 € la nuit, le second à 228 €.
Choose according to what you're looking for: an agriturismo like Podere Del Lepre gives you the calm of the countryside, while a hotel like Sovana Hotel & Resort gives you the services of a classic establishment. If your budget is tighter, theHotel in Sovana reste bien noté (7.6) pour 104 € la nuit. Les prix varient selon la saison et le type de chambre, donc vérifie les tarifs à tes dates avant de réserver.
