What is the most beautiful Etruscan tomb to see in Maremma?

The most spectacular tomb in Maremma is the tomb Ildebranda, in the necropolis of Sovana (commune of Sorano). Carved directly into the tuff cliff toward the 3rd or 2nd century BC, it imitated the facade of a temple, with columns and sculpted decorations of which fragments remain. It is one of the rare examples of a temple-shaped tomb preserved in Etruria.

It can be visited in the archaeological park of the Città del Tufo, with a paid ticket, and the same sector gives access to the Siren Tomb and to vie cave, these paths carved into the rock. If you prefer the large tumuli, the Pietrera tomb à Vetulonia is impressive for its stone chamber. At Vulci, just past the boundary of Latium, the famous François tomb can be visited by reservation, but its original frescoes were detached in the 19th century and are now in Rome.

For Ildebranda, check the opening hours before you leave: the park closes or reduces its hours outside the season. Come early in the morning, the low light brings out the reliefs. Everything is detailed in our article on the tomb Ildebranda.
