The monumental tomb of Sovana is called the Tomb of Ildebranda. It is located in the Etruscan necropolis of Poggio Felceto, near the village, and probably dates from the IIIe century BC. Its name refers to Ildebrando of Sovana, who became Pope Gregory VII, but this does not mean he is buried there: the tomb is indeed Etruscan.
Your first impression will be that of a temple carved into the tufa, with a podium and a columned facade. Part of its decoration and structure has disappeared or deteriorated, notably because tufa is a crumbly rock; the monument therefore no longer appears as an intact temple. The burial chamber lies at the end of a corridor carved into the rock. It is part of the archaeological park of Città del Tufo, where you can also discover other tombs and paths carved into the tufa.
