The place

Sovana is a gem of authenticity, you're going to love getting lost in its medieval alleys and exploring its incredible Etruscan necropolis!

👥 Who it's for: Travelers passionate about history and authentic culture

Sovana is a secret gem nestled in the heart of Maremma, a hamlet of 115 souls that tells more than 2000 years of history. Far from the tourist trails, this village offers a journey through time where every stone bears witness to Etruscan and medieval civilizations.

Sovana: An Etruscan Treasure in the Heart of Tuscany

Located in the province of Grosseto, Sovana has its roots in the 7th century BC. Built on a tuff spur, this village has witnessed successive civilizations, from the Etruscans to powerful medieval families such as the Aldobrandeschi and the Orsini. A place where history has left deep traces, starting with the birth of Pope Gregory VII.

The Historical Heart: Piazza del Pretorio

The central square of Sovana is a true open-air museum. There you will discover the Etruscan necropolis and monuments steeped in history:

  • The Aldobrandesca Fortress : Remains of a medieval castle, with Etruscan blocks embedded at its base.
  • The Church of Santa Maria : A Romanesque-Gothic masterpiece housing a unique pre-Romanesque ciborium.
  • The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul : An architectural gem marking the transition between Romanesque and Gothic.

The Etruscan Treasures

A few kilometers from the village, the «Città del Tufo» Archaeological Park reveals wonders. The Vie Cave, these roads carved into the tuff by the Etruscans, are a spectacular journey. The Tomb of Ildebranda, carved directly into the rock, is a masterpiece of Etruscan funerary art.

Maremman Flavors

Local gastronomy is another treasure of Sovana. Let yourself be tempted by the pappardelle with wild boar, pici all'aglione, or acquacotta, this traditional soup. The Taverna Etrusca, housed in a 13th-century building, offers an authentic culinary experience.
