What to see in Sorano and Sovana?

À Sorano and Sovana, count mainly on the medieval alleys, the churches and the paths carved into the tuff: the two villages are located about 9 km from each other, and one day is enough to see them without rushing. In Sorano, climb up to the Masso Leopoldino for the panorama, then stroll through the old town around the Fortezza Orsini. If you want to walk, head to the via cava of San Rocco and the nearby necropolis; plan on good shoes, as the paths are uneven and sometimes steep.

À Sovana, la piazza del Pretorio, l’église Santa Maria Maggiore and its pre-Roman ciborium can easily be visited on foot; the cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is a little away from the heart of the village. For the Etruscan tombs, continue on to the necropolis of Sovana, where you can walk along ways carved into the rock, including the Cavone. Allow about 1 h 30 to 2 h for the necropolis, more if you take the time to walk. In summer, set out in the morning instead: the trails are exposed in places and it can get hot. Check the opening hours and access to the park before leaving, as they may vary depending on the season.

Here, the tuff is not just a backdrop: it gives the alleys and paths an almost secret feel, as if the landscape were still keeping its passages to itself. It is this contrast that makes the walk far more intriguing than a simple tour of pretty villages.
