What to see around Vetulonia?

Around Vetulonia, the best stop is Castiglione della Pescaia, about 20 minutes : a fortified village above a fishing port, with long sandy beaches. Just behind it, the Diaccia Botrona nature reserve, a wetland, is one of the best spots in the Maremma for birdwatching. If you prefer hilltop villages, Buriano is very close, with its narrow lanes and view over the plain, and Tirli hides in the woods in the direction of Punta Ala. Inland, Montepescali keeps its ramparts and a wide view over the Maremma. On the Etruscan side, the ruins of Roselle, near Grosseto, pair well with a visit to Vetulonia: it is another major Etruscan city, but with its walls and streets still visible.

The best order, if you have one day: Vetulonia in the morning (the Isidoro Falchi museum, then the tombs at the foot of the village), lunch and afternoon in Castiglione, sunset on the beach. Check the opening hours of the museum and the archaeological park before you go: they change with the seasons. In Vetulonia, look at the walls of the upper town: some huge blocks, laid without mortar, date from the Etruscans.
