The wine
I recommend this Tuscan white for its unusual blend of freshness and barrel aging: the Trebbiano shows notes of green apple and peach, extended by a touch of vanilla and a hint of citrus. On the palate, its creamy, velvety texture adds depth to the whole without dulling its liveliness. A wine with character, born in the hills of the Pratomagno and crafted with care.
The Sàgona Bianco 2024 is produced at the Sagona estate, in a mountainous area of the province of Arezzo, in Tuscany. Daniela and Bárbara fell in love with this place in 2012 and settled there, among the vines and olive trees. The parcels, laid out in terraces, are crossed by the waters of two rivers. This geography gives a very particular setting to life at the estate, located more than 600 meters above sea level.
The grape variety is Trebbiano, grown on the five hectares of vines tended by the couple. Most of the parcels were planted in 1970 and are farmed with respect for the environment. For this cuvée, the grapes come from the Sàgona and Capò Maggio vineyards. The wine is classified as IGP Toscana; it is organically farmed and suits people looking for a vegan wine.
On tasting, the nose opens onto green apple and ripe peach. The palate confirms this freshness with an enveloping, creamy texture that leaves a velvety sensation. The vanilla, discreet, and a note of citrus bring balance and liveliness. The wine spends about ten months in previously used oak barrels: the aging supports the fruit without the woody notes becoming the sole subject. After manual pressing and fermentation, it is bottled with low doses of sulfites, without stabilization, filtration or fining. This work preserves a minimally interventionist expression, while giving the white a fuller texture than a simply light and immediate profile.
I would serve it with seafood, white fish or vegetables, pairings that let its freshness respond to the flavors of the dish. It also goes well with soft cheeses: its creamy texture finds a pleasant echo, while the citrus notes keep the whole balanced. To share over a quiet meal, when you feel like a Tuscan white that is both lively and marked by its aging, the Sàgona Bianco 2024 deserves a place on the table. Serve it simply with a dish where the ingredients remain legible, to enjoy its nuances of fruit, vanilla and lemon.
