The wine
There are wines that seem to tell the story of a place without raising their voice. Sàgona FonFon 2022 is one of them: this Tuscan orange wine blends the freshness of fruit with a delicately tannic texture, offering a sincere expression, without filter or artifice. I recommend it if you want to explore a skin-contact white that keeps its energy and conviviality.
The Sàgona project began in 2012 on the slopes of the Pratomagno, in a discreet and authentic part of Tuscany. The estate works leased land, inherited from subsistence farming models, where vines, olive trees and orchards coexist. Here there is no uniform monoculture: the plots are fragmented, and the work champions respect for the place and attention to what is essential. The FonFon is labeled IGP Toscana.
This cuvée blends 90% Trebbiano and 10% Malvasia, from a vineyard over fifty years old in the Ambra valley, at about 300 meters of altitude. In the cellar, the grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts after ten days of skin maceration, then the wine rests twelve months in stainless steel tanks. It is unfiltered. Made organically and vegan, this skin-contact white also carries a name full of affection: FonFon, a character from Jean-Claude Izzo's Marseille trilogy, who runs a neighborhood bar where people listen as much as they talk. A reference that echoes the discreet and welcoming spirit Sàgona wishes to convey.
In the glass, its golden yellow color announces a strong personality without heaviness. The nose opens on ripe apricot and orange, then nuances of dried flowers, hay and aromatic herbs come through. On the palate, I find a juicy, fresh, flavorful body, balanced by a light tannic structure that carries through the finish. The fruit does not mask the vegetal and floral notes: the whole remains alive, with that sense of presence maceration brings to wine. Aging in stainless steel lets these aromas express themselves without introducing woody notes.
I would serve FonFon 2022 with roasted vegetables, an onion tart, aged cheeses or a legume dish with herbs: plates capable of matching its ripe fruit and light tannins without overwhelming its freshness. It can also accompany an aperitif where there is time to taste and talk. Serve it with simple, generous cooking, and let it sit in the glass for a few moments so its aromas can unfold. If you are curious about orange wines, this bottle offers an accessible way to approach their texture and complexity, while keeping drinkability firmly in view.
