The wine

Sàgona Gattorosso 2024, the red cat of the Pratomagno

The name evokes a red cat, calm and mysterious; the wine, for its part, tells the story of a corner of Tuscany shaped to a human scale. I recommend this organic and vegan red for its frank fruit, its freshness and that elegant rusticity that doesn't try to hide its origin.

Pratomagno, a Tuscany of small plots

Since 2012, the Sàgona estate has cultivated the slopes of the Pratomagno, in a part of Tuscany that is less touristy. Here, the lands are divided into small plots and different crops sit side by side: olive trees, fruit trees, cereals and old vines make up a varied agricultural landscape. The estate's philosophy rests on three gestures: cultivate, preserve and tell the story of the territory, while respecting its rhythms.

The Gattorosso grapes grow at 300 meters of altitude, on silty and sandy soils. The blend of the 2024 vintage combines 65% Sangiovese, 25% Malvasia Nera and 10% other red varieties, among them Colorino, Ciliegiolo and Canaiolo. The wine is labeled IGP Toscana. The harvest is manual; each variety ferments separately with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control. Aging lasts ten months. The estate works in organic farming, and the wine is vegan.

On the palate, the available information describes a fresh and structured red, with clean fruit and an elegant rusticity. The color is red, but its shade is not specified; the tasting notes do not detail the particular aromas on the nose either. I prefer to stick to what is announced rather than promise you fruits or spices that are not documented. On the palate, the markers given are therefore freshness, structure and fruit clarity, in a young style, with a body that is measured rather than imposing.

At the table, without ceremony

I would serve it with a risotto, a plate of pasta or a pizza, pairings that let its freshness and fruit accompany the meal without taking up all the room. It can also go with red meat, as the estate suggests. Its profile seems particularly suited to a convivial table, when you want a Tuscan red with character without seeking a heavy or showy wine. The ten months of aging and the blend of local grape varieties give it a precise anchor, while its expression remains accessible around a shared dish. If you want to taste an agricultural Tuscany, made of mixed plots and simple gestures, the Gattorosso 2024 offers a sincere gateway: open it for dinner, and let the Pratomagno join you at the table.
