The wine

Il Conventino 2023, the balance of Vino Nobile

In this Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Sangiovese leads the way, joined by local red grape varieties and aging in Slavonian oak. I recommend it to you for its profile, described as balanced, both fruity and marked by the wood, without losing sight of the character of the place. An organic red that is worth taking the time to listen to rather than reducing it to a few familiar notes.

An organic wine at the heart of Montepulciano

Il Conventino works in the Montepulciano wine zone, between the Val di Chiana and the Val d'Orcia. Its twenty hectares of vines grow on clay soils, at an altitude of 350 to 400 meters. The region has a long winemaking history: according to the estate's account, the tradition goes back to the Etruscan era, before the arrival of the Romans. Il Conventino belongs to this heritage, with wines oriented toward Vino Nobile. The estate is also counted among the local pioneers of organic certification.

The 2023 vintage is made up of 85% Sangiovese and 15% other red grape varieties. Prugnolo Gentile, Mammolo, Canaiolo and Colorino are among the local varieties cited for the blend. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard, then destemmed and pressed. Spontaneous fermentation is accompanied by a short maceration of fifteen days, at controlled temperature. The wine then matures for at least twenty-four months in Slavonian oak barrels: an aging process that contributes to its woody profile, although the available information does not allow us to attribute specific wood aromas to the wine.

On tasting, the color is that of a red wine. The nose is described as perfumed, but no more detailed aromatic notes are specified; I prefer to let you approach it without assigning in advance fruit or spice perfumes. On the palate, the words that characterize it are roundness and balance. Its profile sits between fruity and spicy, with a perceptible presence of wood, while its body falls in an intermediate range. These are stylistic markers, not a promise of an identical sensation for every taster. The house presents it as a classic wine with significant potential for evolution.

At the table, between meats and aged cheeses

I would serve it with red meat or white meat, two pairings suggested for this Vino Nobile. Aged cheeses can also keep it company, especially if you want to extend the meal around a wine that has benefited from wood aging. Open it for a dinner where there's time to taste and talk; let it breathe and observe how its balance shows itself in the glass. If you're looking for an organic red from Montepulciano, crafted in a classic style and made mainly from sangiovese, Il Conventino 2023 deserves a place at your table.
