The wine
In this Rosso di Montepulciano 2024, I first note the choice of local grape varieties and a committed organic farming approach that has been in place for a long time. Sangiovese takes the lead, joined by Canaiolo, Colorino and Mammolo. Aged in Slavonian oak, this red favors the expression of fruit and an announced freshness, without trying to hide its character behind the wood.
Il Conventino is located in the heart of the Montepulciano wine zone, in Tuscany, on an estate of about ten hectares. The Brini family has owned it since 2003. The estate is among the pioneers of organic farming in the region and emphasizes respect for traditions as well as for the surrounding nature. In the vineyards, this approach translates into defending biodiversity and the absence of chemical herbicides, fungicides and pesticides.
The blend brings together four local red grape varieties: Canaiolo, Colorino, Mammolo and Sangiovese, the dominant variety of the region. After grape selection, destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, at controlled temperature, with indigenous yeasts. Maceration with the skins lasts about ten days. The wine is then aged in 50-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks, then rests three months in bottle. The data sheet mentions three Slavonian oak barrels: the wood therefore accompanies the wine, but its imprint remains discreet in the announced style.
The available notes describe an organic, fruity red with an appealing bouquet and a distinctive freshness. Its body is moderate rather than massive; the profile is presented as clearly more fruity than woody or spicy. I prefer to stick to these reference points: no specific color or particular aroma of fruit, flower or spice is documented. When tasting, expect a young wine, with the energy of Sangiovese and a measured wood framework, rather than a very detailed aromatic description. It is a Rosso of character, designed to keep a readable link with its grape varieties and its place of origin.
I would serve it with a plate of cured meats, aged cheeses, or red meat. Game is also among the recommended pairings, especially if you're preparing a seasonal meal where the wine can accompany bold flavors. Its announced liveliness and balanced body make it a bottle to open at the table, rather than a wine reserved for a long solitary tasting. For a simple meal as well as a convivial occasion, let it sit in the glass for a few moments to enjoy its bouquet. If you're looking for an organic Tuscan red, made from local varieties and aged without any noticeable excess of wood, this 2024 vintage deserves a place on your table.
