Comment on noteThe wine
Imagine for a moment Tuscany, its gentle hills and its sun-drenched vineyards. It is there, in the heart of Montalcino, that I discovered a bottle that whispers history and passion: the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva 2019 from Tenuta Pian delle Vigne, signed Marchesi Antinori.
Tenuta Pian delle Vigne, located about 6 km south-west of Montalcino, is an estate where tradition meets excellence. It is here that Marchesi Antinori, a name that resonates with prestige in the world of Italian wine, carefully cultivates his Sangiovese. This unique grape variety is the soul of Brunello, and in this Riserva, it expresses itself with remarkable depth.
This wine is the fruit of fermentation in steel tanks, followed by maceration for about two weeks, allowing all the richness of the skins to be extracted. The ageing then continues in wood, for more than two years, in barrels of 5 to 30 hectolitres. This process gives the wine an intense and disciplined personality. To the eye, its colour is deep and inviting. On the nose, you will be captivated by complex aromas of cocoa, vanilla, tobacco, black cherry, plum, blood orange and a balsamic touch. On the palate, it reveals a perfect balance between structure and freshness, with tannins that are present but magnificently integrated, inviting a meditative tasting.
This Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva 2019 is a wine of character, which flourishes fully in the company of robust dishes. I recommend it with red meats of good consistency, a stewed game or aged cheeses. Remember to open it a little in advance to allow it to reveal all its aromatic complexity. It is the kind of bottle one keeps for special occasions, those where one takes the time to savour every moment and every sip.
