Poggio Landi Rosso 2024, Sangiovese without detours

In the hills of Montalcino, Sangiovese does not always let itself be tamed: it demands time and a careful hand. The Poggio Landi Rosso di Montalcino 2024 offers a barrel-aged expression of it, made from organically farmed grapes. I appreciate it for the alliance between an emblematic grape, a precise terroir and measured aging.

Montalcino, its slopes and Sangiovese

This red is produced in Montalcino, in Tuscany, under the DOC Rosso di Montalcino appellation. Sangiovese is the reference grape there. The source presents it as capable of yielding two distinct styles: the Rosso, younger and vibrant, and the Brunello di Montalcino, associated with extended aging. The 2024 thus follows a path that favors an approach less patient to wait for, without giving up barrel aging.

Poggio Landi has been run since 2012 by Alejandro Bulgheroni, who undertook the renovation of the estate and its facilities. Its 33 hectares of vines have been converted to organic farming. The vines, aged 18 to 25 years, are planted on clay soils, facing south-southwest and spread between 180 and 500 meters of altitude. These details outline a hillside vineyard, with a diversity of situations rather than a single uniform profile. In the cellar, fermentation starts spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged twelve months in French oak barriques, followed by three months in bottle.

For tasting, the available information remains sober: it indicates a red wine, but describes neither the shade of the color, nor precise aromas on the nose, nor detailed notes on the palate. I prefer to stick to what is confirmed rather than attribute fruit or spice aromas to it. A style grid places it very low on the fruity-spicy axis, higher on the side of barrel aging and body. This suggests a profile marked by wood and a certain breadth, without allowing us to deduce particular flavors. If you are looking for a precise aroma profile before opening the bottle, keep this limit in mind: the 2024 vintage is not described in more detail in the available sources.

At the table, from risotto to red meats

At the table, I readily picture it with a risotto, pasta or a pizza, pairings suggested for this wine that leave Sangiovese a central place. You can also serve it with red meat, game, charcuterie or aged cheeses. For a simple occasion, an aperitif built around savory treats will also suit it. Serve it when you feel like a Tuscan red aged in oak, and take the time to let it open up in the glass: a lovely way to savor, without rushing, the character of Montalcino.
