The wine
I recommend this Rosso di Montalcino for its balance of fruit, freshness and subtle spice. In the 2024 vintage, the Sangiovese shows itself expressive without losing its restraint: ripe cherry and blackberry meet rose petals, then black pepper and cinnamon gently take over. A red that is both supple and structured, leaving a lasting impression without seeking an effect of power.
This wine is made by Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona, an estate located in Montalcino, in Tuscany, and presented under the DOC Rosso di Montalcino appellation. The history of the estate is tied to the union of the Ciacci and Piccolomini d'Aragona families, whose aristocratic origins date back several centuries. Their palazzo, still present on the estate, recalls that past; but it is above all the link between place, vineyard and know-how that gives the wine its direction here. I find this encounter interesting: a long history, without the red trying to put on solemn airs.
The Sangiovese, the sole grape variety in this cuvée, grows between 240 and 360 meters of altitude, on sandy and marly soils. These characteristics are associated with the wine's freshness and minerality. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and vitrified concrete vats, before aging in oak barrels. The fruit remains in the foreground, while the wood supports the structure. The result described by the tasting is precise: a bright ruby-red color, then a nose where ripe red and black fruits mingle with floral and spicy notes. On the palate, the fluid texture rests on polished, supple, well-integrated tannins. The finish lingers pleasantly, with a harmony that combines freshness and complexity. This is not a wine to reduce to a single fruit note: the nuances of rose, pepper and cinnamon give it relief, without overshadowing the cherry and blackberry.
At the table, I would serve it with white meats, charcuterie or red meat, pairings that echo its ripe fruit and balanced structure. It can accompany a shared meal where you take the time to talk as much as to taste, without demanding a complicated dish to shine. If you enjoy Sangiovese reds that are fruity, supple and lifted by a touch of spice, this 2024 deserves a place on your table. Simply give it time to open up in the glass: its aromas of cherry, blackberry and rose will then unfold, followed by the lingering finish that marks this cuvée.
