The wine
I remember in this Riserva the meeting between the depth of Sangiovese and a history of nearly nine centuries. The Novecento 2022 combines red fruit, notes of leather and spice with a generous structure, supported by an acidity that keeps it lively. A character-driven red, made from organic viticulture.
The Dievole estate sits in the heart of Chianti Classico, in Tuscany. Its history begins in 1090, and the name Novecento honors the property's 900 years. This commemorative wine also reflects an approach focused on expressing the terroir: the entire estate is run under organic farming, without chemical products in the vineyards. For me, these elements give the bottle a concrete context without reducing it to its historical story alone.
The grapes come from plots located between 300 and 420 meters above sea level. The vines, averaging fifteen years old, grow on clay-silt soils mixed with marl, limestone and stones. The blend combines 95% Sangiovese, 3% Canaiolo and 2% Colorino. After harvesting at full ripeness, fermentation runs for 14 to 15 days in 75-hectoliter concrete vats, at controlled temperature, with indigenous yeasts. The wine then ages 18 months in large French oak barrels, followed by six months in bottle in the cellar for refinement. This winemaking supports the fruit without erasing the personality of the main grape variety.
To the eye, the Novecento shows an intense ruby-red color. The nose opens on cherry and small red fruits, then reveals nuances of leather, cocoa and spice. On the palate, the texture is concentrated and the structure robust; the tannins envelop the palate, while lively acidity brings balance. The finish lingers and leaves a velvety sensation. I find this contrast between the wine's density and the freshness that keeps it from seeming simply massive interesting. The aromas described sketch a generous yet nuanced profile, where the fruit remains present among the deeper notes.
I would serve it with red meats, game or cured meats, pairings that match its structure and tannins. Aged cheeses offer another option, simpler for a convivial meal. You can choose this Chianti Classico Riserva for an autumn table, a festive dinner or a meal where you take time to return to the wine's aromas. Let it rest a few moments in the glass so its notes of fruit, leather and spice can unfold. If you are looking for a bottle that combines a blend dominated by Sangiovese, extended aging and a well-documented Tuscan history, the Dievole Novecento 2022 deserves a place at the table.
