The wine

Monteraponi Chianti Classico 2024, the freshness of Sangiovese

I recommend this Chianti Classico for its clean red fruit, its freshness and its agile profile, supported by a well-present structure. The 2024 vintage combines the vibrancy of Sangiovese with a touch of Canaiolo and oak aging that brings subtle spicy notes.

A historic estate at the heart of Chianti Classico

Monteraponi lies at the heart of Tuscany, within the Chianti Classico area, in Italy. The estate is organized around an ancient medieval tower, whose central structure has remained almost unchanged over the centuries. Its 200-hectare landscape, sheltered from the wind, includes ancient forests, olive groves and vineyards farmed according to certified organic methods. This presence of forest and olive trees shapes the estate's agricultural setting without drawing attention away from the wine itself: a red of the DOCG Chianti Classico appellation.

The blend combines 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in cement tanks, without added yeasts, with old vessels and conical cement tanks among the cellar's equipment. The wine then matures in oval oak casks for more than sixteen months, followed by one month of aging in cement. It is bottled without filtration or fining. I find it interesting that this precise winemaking fits a style described as light and agile: the wood accompanies the fruit rather than erasing it, while the structure gives the wine a presence at the table.

In the glass, the color is that of a red, with no more precise indication in the available notes. The nose opens on fresh red cherries and a hint of raspberry, then reveals a floral accent suggesting violet. The tasting notes also mention ripe cherry and Mediterranean herbs, joined by a touch of spice from the aging. On the palate, the whole is fresh, fruity and juicy. The well-defined acidity brings liveliness, the tannins are delicate and the body remains structured enough not to disappear behind this lightness. The finish, pleasantly persistent, extends the spicy nuances with restraint. If you enjoy Tuscan reds where the fruit keeps its clarity, this profile deserves a place on your table.

At the table, ragù and grilled meats

I would serve it with ragù pasta, a traditional pairing that echoes its red fruit and freshness, or with grilled meats. The tasting notes also suggest rice dishes, legumes and game, so you can vary it with the season and the menu. You can share it at a relaxed dinner, when the meal takes its time and the conversations stretch out. For a first encounter, choose a simple, flavorful dish rather than one loaded with spices; that way the cherry, the herbs and the delicately oaked finish of this Monteraponi 2024 can shine through.
