The wine
There is a generous yet well-composed way of telling the story of Tuscany in this Chianti Classico. The 2023 Dievole combines ripe red and black fruits with a silky texture, supported by polished tannins and a clean structure. I recommend it if you're looking for a red with character, aged in oak, that keeps the fruit front and center without sacrificing depth.
About twelve kilometers from Siena, the Dievole estate sits within the Chianti Classico landscape, in the heart of a territory where vines and wine have a long history. The property lies in a rural setting shaped by nature and the traditions of Tuscany. For this DOCG cuvée, Sangiovese takes the leading role: it is the region's emblematic grape, presented here in a fruity and structured expression. The estate works organically, and the grapes are harvested by hand at what is judged to be their optimal ripeness.
The vines, 18 years old, grow between 300 and 420 meters above sea level, on soils mixing sandstone, silt and clay, with limestone and marl. After manual harvesting, fermentation takes place in concrete vats, at controlled temperature, for 14 to 15 days. The wine then spends 13 months in French oak barriques, followed by three months of bottle aging before release. In the glass, its deep ruby-red color gives way to an intense nose of ripe cherry and blueberry. The palate is juicy, full and warm, with a texture described as silky and finely polished tannins. The fruit remains generous, while a well-defined structure gives the whole its balance. Wood aging adds depth to the wine without masking its fruity aromas.
I would serve it with a platter of cured meats, sautéed mushrooms or a slow-simmered legume dish, whose earthy flavors pair well with the Sangiovese fruit. It also accompanies red meats, grilled or long-cooked, for a meal where you take time to linger at the table. Its richness and structure give it enough presence to stand up to flavorful dishes, while its cherry and blueberry notes add a touch of aromatic freshness. Open it at a simple yet thoughtful dinner, when you want a Tuscan red with substance and a true sense of place. A glass that invites you to slow down and enjoy the meal, without ceremony.
