What are the rules for picking porcini mushrooms with PGI Mont Amiata status?

There is no such thing as "Monte Amiata PGI porcini": the local PGI concerns the Monte Amiata chestnut. To pick porcini mushrooms in the Amiata woods, you must therefore follow the general rules of Tuscany, with possible restrictions specific to the municipality or a protected area. If you do not reside in Tuscany, the tourist permit costs 15 € for one day or 40 € for seven consecutive days. Keep proof of payment and an ID with you. The limit is 3 kg per person per day. For porcini mushrooms, picking is prohibited if the cap measures less than 4 cm. You can pick between one hour before sunrise and one hour after sunset, only in woods or grounds where access and picking are allowed. No rakes or tools that damage the soil or the mycelium; carry the mushrooms in a rigid, ventilated basket, never in a plastic bag. Before setting off, check local notices: some areas, especially protected spaces, may apply stricter rules or temporarily ban harvesting.

The trap is confusing the reputation of Amiata porcini with a PGI label: it is better to check the local rules before heading out with your basket.
