The wine
In this Rosso di Montepulciano 2024, I find a direct expression of the fruit, carried by freshness rather than power. Cherry, ripe strawberry, violet and a spicy touch make up an inviting profile, while supple tannins and lively acidity give it momentum. A young, organic and vegan red, to choose for its vitality as much as for its Tuscan roots.
Avignonesi makes this wine in Montepulciano, in Tuscany, under the DOC Rosso di Montepulciano appellation. The estate owns more than 170 hectares of certified vineyards and follows an organic and biodynamic approach attentive to biodiversity. Led by Virginie Saverys, it champions a philosophy where the care given to the grapes and soils matters as much as the work in the cellar. For this 2024, the main grape variety is Sangiovese, at 90%, complemented by 10% Colorino: two varieties that define a cuvée faithful to the region's landmarks.
After selection and destemming of the grapes, fermentation takes place with yeasts chosen by the cellar. Maceration on the skins lasts about eight to twelve days, with daily pump-overs, and then the wine spends six months in oak barrels. This ageing stage is clearly present, but the tasting notes mainly highlight fruit and freshness. The color is not described in the available information; I therefore prefer not to attribute a hue or intensity that nothing confirms. On the nose, however, the aromas are clear: cherries and ripe strawberries, violet, then a discreet spicy nuance. On the palate, the wine is light and youthful. Its supple tannins balance with a vibrant acidity that extends the fruity impression. The 2024 vintage is presented as particularly fresh and pure, following favorable weather conditions in Montepulciano.
I would serve it with game or charcuterie, the pairings suggested for this cuvée. The light body and supple tannins do not seek to dominate the dish, while the lively acidity accompanies frank, salty flavors well. For a simple table, a few slices of charcuterie leave it all the room it needs; with game, it will find a more earthy companion. It is a wine I would keep for a convivial meal, when you want an expressive red without heaviness. If you enjoy Sangiovese in a young, fruity and fresh vein, this Rosso from Avignonesi deserves a place at the table: open it with a generous dish and let the terroir of Montepulciano speak through the fruit.
