The wine

Siro Pacenti Vecchie Vigne 2020, a Brunello with character

There's a pairing in this Brunello that I especially love: the depth of dark fruit, the presence of tannins, and an elegance that doesn't try to mask the substance. The Siro Pacenti Vecchie Vigne 2020 comes from 35-year-old vines and is aged at length in French oak barrels. If you enjoy generous Tuscan reds, built to accompany a meal as much as to wait patiently in the cellar, it's worth taking the time to explore it.

Montalcino, old vines and Sangiovese

The Siro Pacenti estate is located in Montalcino, in Tuscany, not far from Siena and its medieval streets. Its story begins in 1970, when Siro Pacenti bought five hectares of vines north of Montalcino. The property today spans about 60 hectares, devoted to vines, olive trees and cereals. It also includes land south of the appellation, where Siro's father had planted vines in the 1960s. These plots and this history give the cuvée a concrete anchor, without the need to embellish the landscape.

Since 1988, his son Giancarlo has run the estate. He has developed a careful approach to grape quality, to biodynamic agriculture and to modern winemaking equipment. The Vecchie Vigne is made from Sangiovese from 35-year-old vines. After vinification, it spends 24 months in French oak barrels, then continues to evolve in bottle for 12 to 24 months. This patience shows in an ample profile, where the fruit stays in the foreground, supported by a firm tannic structure. The sheet cites an average of 96/100 among experts: a useful reference, rather than a promise to take as a personal verdict.
