The wine
I'm picking this Chianti Rufina for its direct link to a single place: the Bucerchiale vineyard, whose name it carries. Made exclusively from Sangiovese, this red combines a precise single-plot origin with ten months of aging in oak barrels.
Fattoria Selvapiana is located in Chianti, in Tuscany. The estate has medieval roots, but the story of this cuvée begins with Francesco Giuntini, who took over the property in 1957. He then believed in the potential of Sangiovese grown on a single plot: Bucerchiale. This wine became the emblem of the house and is only produced in the vintages judged to be the best.
The vineyard lies at the foot of the Apennines, between 200 and 350 meters above sea level. Its clay-limestone soils, vines aged 16 to 40 years, and north-facing exposure create a cool environment with moderate temperatures. The grapes are harvested by hand, then ferment spontaneously in stainless steel tanks thanks to indigenous yeasts. A maceration with the skins precedes about ten months of aging in French oak barrels.
The 2022 vintage gives a red wine whose tasting sheet does not detail the aromas: I therefore prefer not to assign it precise tasting notes. The available information places it more on the side of fruit than spice, with a noticeable presence of barrel aging and a medium body. They sketch a measured profile, without claiming to replace tasting the wine in the glass. The Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG appellation and the work on a single plot give concrete reference points here for understanding its character.
I would serve it with red meat, game or pasta, suggested pairings for this wine. It can also accompany a pizza, a risotto or cheeses, whether mild, aged or blue. Serve it at a meal where you can take the time to follow the wine and the dish, rather than looking for a spectacular pairing. Bucerchiale 2022 above all invites you to taste Sangiovese in its Tuscan expression and to let the terroir of Rufina speak at its own pace.
