Sangiovese is THE dominant red grape variety in Tuscany, and therefore in Maremma. You'll find it in almost all the red wines of the region. It's what gives Morellino di Scansano its fruity character and spicy notes, for example. In Maremma, sangiovese expresses itself with more roundness and less aggressive tannins than in Chianti Classico, thanks to the warmer climate and the proximity of the sea. Understanding sangiovese means understanding a large part of what you'll drink here. It's the foundation of the local wine culture.
