The most typical wines of the Tuscan Maremma are the Morellino di Scansano, a red based on sangiovese, and the whites from Vermentino and of the’Ansonica. Morellino is a DOCG made with at least 85% sangiovese ; depending on the style, it can be soft and fruity or more structured, especially in Riserva. It pairs well with pasta with ragù, grilled meats and game. Vermentino, very widespread in the coastal area, generally produces dry, fresh whites; Ansonica, also called inzolia, is another local white variety, often fuller-bodied.
The Maremma Toscana DOC covers a wider range: reds from sangiovese, ciliegiolo or alicante, rosés, whites from vermentino or other grape varieties, sometimes in blends. You may also come across wines made from international grape varieties such as merlot, cabernet sauvignon or syrah: Maremma is therefore not limited to sangiovese. To taste several styles, look for the appellations Morellino di Scansano DOCG and Maremma Toscana DOC on the wine lists. The harvest usually takes place between September and October, with dates that vary depending on the grape variety and the year; this does not prevent the cellars from welcoming tastings at other times, by reservation.
