👥 Who it's for: Wine lovers, travelers in search of authenticity and secret terroirs
Morellino is not just a wine; it is the reflection of a terroir, a culture, and the ingenuity of its winemakers. If you are looking for authenticity, the kind that vibrates between sea and hills, then dive into the vineyards of Scansano.
Imagine vines bathed in the Tuscan sun, caressed by sea breezes coming from the Tyrrhenian Sea, and protected by the hills that rise toward the ancient volcano of Monte Amiata. It is here, in the province of Grosseto, that the Morellino. is born. The production area extends mainly over the municipality of Scansano, but also over parts of Campagnatico, Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana, Manciano, Roccalbegna and Semproniano.
This contrasting landscape offers an incredible diversity of soils and microclimates. Near the coast, you find sandy and silty lands, while further inland, the soils become clayey or even tuffaceous, rich in volcanic minerals near Pitigliano. It is this mosaic of terroirs, located between 150 and 300 meters above sea level, that gives Morellino its complexity and its multiple nuances.
At the center of this aromatic symphony is the Sangiovese, the king grape variety of Tuscany, which must represent at least 85% of the blend. The remaining 15% can be made up of other red grape varieties authorized in Tuscany, thus offering precious freedom to winemakers to express the typicity of their terroir.
The name «Morellino» itself is subject to debate, but the most charming theory links it to the «morello», the Maremmana breed horse with a dark coat, evoking the deep color of the wine. A beautiful image, isn't it?
Morellino di Scansano has not always enjoyed the renown it knows today. Long considered a rustic and somewhat «ungrateful» wine, it was nevertheless already praised in 1884 for the excellence of its crus. The major turning point took place in the 2000s, when its excellent value for money propelled it into the spotlight.
Fortunately, this period also acted as a «natural selection», pushing the best winemakers to excel. The hard work of the Consorzio Tutela Morellino di Scansano was crucial. Their efforts were rewarded in 2007, when Morellino di Scansano obtained the prestigious appellation DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), a recognition of the exceptional quality achieved at every stage of production.
To truly understand Morellino, you must go and meet those who make it. The region is full of wine estates, from small family-run operations to historic cooperatives like the Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano.
This cooperative, founded in 1972, brings together around 170 members and cultivates some 700 hectares of vines. Their cellar, renovated in 2018, is a true point of reference for wine tourism in Maremma. They offer guided tours where you will discover the history of Maremma, the winemaking process, and of course, the aging cellar.
Today, Morellino di Scansano wines are wines that combine tradition and modernity. They are often described as wines with great drinkability, convivial but not «crowd-pleasers». Their aromatic profiles vary depending on proximity to the sea: wines from coastal vines can express marine notes, wild herbs, while those from inland will be more focused on red fruit and spices.
Morellino is enjoyed chilled, even with fish dishes, and pairs divinely with Cacciucco, the famous fish soup of Livorno. But it is also the ideal companion for the robust flavors of the Maremma : cold cuts, cheeses, and of course, game.
So, the next time you visit Tuscany, get off the beaten path. Let yourself be guided by the winding roads of Maremma, breathe in the salty air and the scent of the scrubland, and raise your glass to the authenticity of the Morellino di Scansano DOCG. Salute!
