How we rateThe wine
I love this Brunello for the way it combines the generous fruit of the vintage with a structure that isn't overpowered by richness. The Sangiovese unfolds cherry, dark fruit, herbs and spice, then lingers on a finish where a touch of chocolate appears. With its average score of 96/100 from experts, it's a bottle to open with care, not to rush.
The Gaja family acquired the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in 1994. Located in the southwestern part of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, it comprises 40 acres of vines. Its name comes from the church of Santa Restituta, which sits on the property: restored by the family, it now appears on the labels. The wine is made from Sangiovese, the grape that provides the thread running through the whole, from cherry aromas to ripe tannins.
The precision of the work is also evident in the vinification steps reported for this cuvée. The grapes are hand-harvested, then fermented for four weeks in stainless steel tanks. The wine then spends twelve months in new and used oak barrels, followed by twelve more months in bottle before being released. The family has also developed a winemaking facility and an underground cellar in the northeast of the appellation, following the acquisition of additional plots. These details offer a glimpse of the care given to the work at the estate, without, however, confusing these sites with the precise origin of each grape in this bottle.
