How we rateThe wine
In this Bolgheri Superiore 2023, you find a bold expression of Bordeaux-style blends, shaped by the Tuscan coastal terroir. Blackcurrant, cherry, herbs and tobacco draw a fresh, floral nose, while a dense, tannic structure promises interesting evolution in the cellar. A wine to open with care, or to let rest.
Ornellaia is made in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, in a maritime environment that helps bring the style of these blends closer to that of Bordeaux wines, without erasing their local identity. The estate is guided by the Antinori family. The 2023 vintage brings together four grape varieties: 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot and 14% Cabernet Franc. This composition gives a major place to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, while Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc complete the blend.
The grapes are harvested and hand-sorted, then gently crushed. A long maceration on the skins contributes to the sought-after style. The wine is then aged eighteen months in barrique, 70% of it new oak. I find it worthwhile to keep these winemaking choices in mind when tasting: they support a structured substance, without the profile relying solely on power. The listing gives it an average score of 97/100 from experts.
