The wine
In this Gran Selezione, the Sangiovese expresses itself with a fruity, floral and spicy framework, carried by a freshness that gives lift to the palate. I recommend it if you like reds that are both concentrated and precise, whose aging supports the fruit without dulling its brightness.
This Chianti Classico DOCG is produced by the Mazzei family around Fonterutoli, in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti, Tuscany. The family history is closely tied to that of Chianti: a document from 1398 mentions the term in the writings of Ser Lapo Mazzei, a Florentine notary and wine enthusiast. Later, the Fonterutoli estate joined the family's holdings through the marriage of his niece to Piero di Agnolo da Fonterutoli. Today, twenty-four generations after those first pages, the family continues its activity at the Castello di Fonterutoli.
The 2022 vintage blends 90% Sangiovese and 10% other red varieties, notably Colorino and Malvasia Nera. The grapes are hand-selected from eleven plots located between 420 and 510 meters in altitude, around the village of Fonterutoli. After fermentation and maceration at controlled temperature, the wine ages for about eighteen months in small oak barrels of 225 and 500 liters, 60% of which are new. This plot-based origin and this aging provide concrete reference points for understanding its balance: the fruit and freshness remain in the foreground, while the wood supports the structure.
To the eye, its robe is a deep ruby red. The nose combines red roses with clove, then opens onto wild berry fruits, particularly blackberry and blueberry. On the palate, the texture is rich and supple; juicy tannins provide a silky texture, while a pronounced freshness keeps the whole lively. What I especially appreciate is this contrast between concentration and vivacity: the wine has presence, but it is not reduced to its power. The floral, fruity and spicy aromas respond to one another with elegance, without losing the thread of the Sangiovese.
I would serve it with roast meat, a braised dish or pasta with a rich sauce, pairings that can welcome its tannins and ripe fruit. It will also find its place at a meal where you take the time to let the wine open and follow its nuances, from the rose bouquet to dark fruits. If you are looking for a Chianti Classico of real intensity, rooted in the history of Fonterutoli and animated by a clean freshness, this 2022 deserves a place at your table.
