What are the best wineries to visit in Maremma?

For a first visit, I would choose Le Mortelle, near Castiglione della Pescaia, Rocca di Frassinello, in Gavorrano, and Fattoria di Magliano, if you want to discover estates with different profiles. Book in every case: visits are not necessarily possible on the spur of the moment.

Le Mortelle is a good fit if you want a structured guided tour: the underground cellar and a tasting of three wines take about 1 h 30, pour €40 per person depending on the offer displayed. Rocca di Frassinello is mainly worth the detour for its architecture by Renzo Piano and its large barrel hall; the classic tour lasts about 1 hour et comprend quatre vins. C’est une expérience davantage centrée sur le bâtiment et le domaine que sur une petite cave familiale.

For a rural setting and a guided tasting, also look at Fattoria di Magliano : the package on offer includes the cellar, the barrel room and four wines, by reservation. Purovino, near Montiano, instead offers a brunch with tour and three wines; this package is advertised from April to November, également sur réservation. Les tarifs et créneaux pouvant varier, vérifie-les avant de partir.

It is better to savor one winery without rushing to the next: in Maremma, the detours are part of the program, not of the delay!
