What is the special feature of Sorano terracotta?

The special feature of the terracotta of Soranois above all that it is often confused with tuff: yet Sorano is known for its village built on a tuff spur, not for a terracotta production with a well-established local technique or designation. I prefer to clarify this rather than attribute to it a specific tradition that is difficult to verify.

The area does indeed have an Etruscan past and remains of ancient ceramics, but this does not prove that there is a direct continuity with the objects sold today. Ceramicists may present their pieces at craft events in Sorano, without this constituting a "Sorano terracotta" with standardized characteristics. If you buy one, instead ask the artisan where the clay was extracted, how the piece was shaped and fired, and whether it is intended for food or decorative use. These are the details that will tell you about the actual object, more than its geographical name alone.

In Sorano, tuff easily steals the show in souvenirs... so be wary if a "local terracotta" label seems to tell the whole story on its own!
