What red wine should you drink in Maremma?

Start with a Morellino di Scansano DOCG : it's the easiest local red to ask for, made with at least 85% sangiovese. The "annata" version is generally fruity, with an acidity that pairs well with dishes without being too heavy; it can nevertheless seem sharp if you prefer very soft, oaky reds. Try it with pici in ragù, wild boar or grilled meats. At theEnoteca Rosso Morellino, in Scansano, the glass is listed at 5 € ; the price varies depending on the establishment.

If you want something rounder and marked by cherry, look for a Ciliegiolo, a grape variety grown in Maremma, sometimes offered as a single-varietal under the Maremma Toscana DOC appellation. For a more powerful red, look at the Maremma Toscana DOC cuvées based on cabernet, merlot or syrah: the style depends heavily on the producer, and some bottles are more oaky than the Morellino. If you're hesitating at the restaurant, order a glass of Morellino first; it also pairs well with aged pecorino. Scansano is located about 30 km from Grosseto, convenient if you want to taste the wine in its production area.

I would choose it for a rustic meal rather than on its own: this red really comes into its own when the plate has character.
