Where are Maremma wines produced in Tuscany?

Maremma wines are produced in southern Tuscany, mainly in the province of Grosseto. The appellation Maremma Toscana DOC covers the entire province: from the inland hills, around Scansano, Pitigliano and Sorano, down to the coast, at the Argentario and to the’île de Giglio. The name «Maremma» therefore refers to a fairly vast area, not a single village or a homogeneous vineyard.

If you were thinking of the red most closely associated with the region, look for the Morellino di Scansano DOCG. Its grapes come from the hilly area around Scansano, between the Ombrone and Albegna rivers: it includes the entire municipality of Scansano and part of those of Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana, Manciano, Campagnatico, Semproniano and Roccalbegna. So it is not the name of all the wines produced in Maremma, but that of a specific appellation, dominated by sangiovese.

In practice, to visit wineries, you can take Scansano as a starting point for Morellino, or expand towards the coast and the hinterland if you want to compare several styles of the Maremma Toscana DOC. The soils and landscapes vary greatly from one area to another; it is best to check the winery's address before planning your itinerary, because «in Maremma» does not necessarily mean near the sea.

The trap is trying to fit everything into a single tour: choose one area for the day, and keep the rest for a future getaway — even a wild boar has its limits!
