The wine

Pozzesi e Figlie Rodáno 2024, the spirit of Chianti

In this Chianti Classico, Sangiovese meets the memory of a small family estate and the depth of aging under wood. I recommend it for its balance between black fruit, a floral touch and fine tannins, without losing sight of its precise roots: the hillsides of Viacosta, in the heart of Tuscany.

Viacosta, Fattoria Rodano and the Chianti Classico appellation

Pozzesi e Figlie Rodáno 2024 is a red DOCG Chianti Classico produced by Fattoria Rodano. The Pozzesi e Figlie estate, associated with this wine, lies between 200 and 300 meters above sea level, along the route linking the Elsa Valley to Castellina. This road once followed part of the Via Francigena, the path taken by pilgrims between northern Europe and Rome. The property is described as a small family farm dating back to the 16the century, run by Enrico Pozzesi and dedicated to an artisanal approach.

The grapes come notably from Viacosta, a south-facing vineyard that the estate regards as the jewel of the property. Cultivation is organic; fermentation takes place in large wooden foudres, and the wine is then aged for 24 months in American oak barrels. The grape varieties listed for this cuvée are Canaiolo, Colorino and Sangiovese. One description, however, presents it as a varietal Sangiovese wine: the sources do not allow the proportions to be specified or this discrepancy to be resolved. I therefore prefer to keep this reservation rather than attribute to the blend a composition that is uncertain.

In the glass, the color is that of a red wine, with no further detail in the available notes. The nose offers aromas of blackcurrant and a delicate hint of violet. On the palate, the wine is described as warm and balanced, with fine, well-integrated tannins that support the fruit without dominating it. The 2024 vintage is presented as favorable to the structure and depth of the cuvée. Its profile sits midway between fruit and spice, with a pronounced presence of wood that does not erase the overall balance. Tasting suggests a red that is already settled, to be savored for its substance as much as for its clear aromas.

At the table, with generous flavors

I would serve it with red meat, poultry, or a platter of cured meats, letting the wine accompany the meal rather than asking it to dominate. Soft or aged cheeses work well too; mushrooms will bring a more earthy pairing, while a blue cheese will play on contrast. This is a bottle to open around a convivial table, when you want a structured yet balanced Chianti Classico. Take the time to let it express itself in the glass: the blackcurrant, violet, and fine tannins give this cuvée a discreet but well-defined presence.
