The wine
In this Chianti Classico Riserva, the Sangiovese sets the tone: a red that is at once fruity, spicy and given a polished character by oak aging. I recommend it for a tasting that takes its time, between ripe cherry, plum and silky tannins. Its profile combines depth and balance without losing sight of the fruit's expression.
Antico Podere Casanova is located in Chianti, in Tuscany, in the heart of the Chianti Classico DOCG area. The estate's history is tied to the Buonarroti family: Podere Casanova is said to have belonged to Michelangelo, who had his wine sent to Florence. The property remained in his family's hands until 1863. Later, the Bucciarelli family, first as sharecroppers, acquired it in 1982 and began bottling their Chianti Classico according to a philosophy founded on respect for the terroir and authenticity.
The Riserva 2017 comes from organically grown grapes, harvested by hand, with a selection of bunches. Sangiovese is the main grape variety; the wine's presentation also mentions Canaiolo and Merlot. After fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine is aged in oak barrels. This stage supports its evolution and complexity without erasing the grape's fruity character. The Riserva designation places this bottle in a register of Chianti Classico intended for a fuller, more structured expression.
The color is a deep ruby. The nose unfolds aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry and plum, mingled with vanilla and cinnamon. Herbaceous nuances and a hint of black pepper add relief. On the palate, the wine is full and balanced: the tannins are silky and well integrated, while the fruit carries through to a long finish. The 2017 vintage is described as concentrated and intense; here, that density is expressed with a structure harmonious enough that every sip stays legible.
I would serve this Bucciarelli with a board of cured meats or aged cheeses, two pairings that answer its tannins and spicy notes. It can also accompany a meal centered on red meats, without the need for an elaborate preparation: simply let the wine find its place at the table. Open it for a dinner where you can take the time to follow its evolution in the glass. If you enjoy Tuscan reds built around Sangiovese, this Riserva 2017 is a fine opportunity to rediscover Chianti Classico in a mature, generous version faithful to its terroir.
