What is the legend of Lake Accesa?

According to the legend, the Lake Accesa covers a village swallowed up for working on a feast day. The July 26, day of the Saint Anneone day a family of farmers refused to rest and threshed their wheat on the threshing floor, because the harvest could not wait. The earth would then have opened with a great crash, swallowing the men, the animals and the sheaves, then the water would have gushed up and filled the hole.

Versions differ depending on the storytellers: for some it's a farm, for others an entire village. All say that, the night before Saint Anne's Day, you can still hear voices, songs and animal cries near the lake, as a reminder to farmers to respect the feast day. The lake is really several dozen meters deep in places, several dozen meters, which has fed the idea of a hidden world beneath the water.

The reality is almost as interesting: on the heights southeast of the lake, excavations carried out since 1980 have uncovered Etruscan residential quarters and a necropolis, linked to the mines of the Colline MetallifereToday you can see its foundations in the archaeological park, a few kilometers from Massa MarittimaThe lake and its ruins are presented on the lake of l'Accesa sheet.
