What is the difference between Cascate del Mulino and Gorello in Saturnia?

The Cascate del Mulino and the Gorello are not two distinct thermal sites: the Gorello is the hot-water stream that feeds the waterfalls and their natural pools. You will sometimes see the name "Cascate del Gorello" used to refer to the waterfalls themselves, which adds to the confusion. The water travels for about 2 kilomètres before rushing down the travertine steps near the old mill.

To bathe in the terraced pools you see in the photos, head for the Cascate del Mulino : access is free, and the water stays around 37.5 °C. The site is outdoors and busy all year round; during peak periods, it can get very crowded, and the rocks are slippery. The water also gives off a fairly strong sulphurous smell.

In short, if someone recommends "the Gorello" as a wilder spot, check what they mean: the name refers first to the stream, not to a second bathing area clearly separate from the waterfalls. Local and tourist names often overlap.

"Gorello" almost sounds like the name of a secret pool... but before setting off to find it, ask for a photo of the spot being mentioned: names can play tricks on curious faces!
