What is the typical dish of Grosseto?

À Grosseto, the first dish to try is the tortello maremmano : a large ravioli of fresh pasta filled with ricotta and spinach, usually served with a meat ragù. It is a specialty of the whole of Maremma, not a dish specific to the city alone. If you prefer a more rustic recipe, also look for theacquacotta, a vegetable soup served on toasted bread, often with an egg and pecorino. Its composition varies according to the available vegetables and the habits of the household.

For a typical meal, order the tortelli as a first course, then check whether the menu offers wild boar or another slow-cooked meat. A glass of Morellino di Scansano, a red wine produced in the region, pairs well with meat sauces. At the restaurant, handmade tortelli are often generous: ask about the portion size if you want to have several courses. You will find these specialties in the trattorias of the center as well as in the agritourism farms nearby; you can also check our page on Grosseto and the Maremma to locate the town and prepare your visit.

As for me, I would let the menu of the day surprise you rather than look for a sophisticated plate: the cuisine of Maremma has more charm when it remains unpretentious.
